 I had heart failure the other day - I was bombing along the M6 and all of a sudden the engine cut out for a split second (with illuminated oil light)... I thought "ooh, weird" and it seemed fine... about another 40 miles on though and it died again (oil light illuminated once more) - and did it about another 4-5 times before I got to my destination with me getting in to the hard shoulder with a bum twitching like a rabbits nose!!!! .. now I have read posts about this and have only had the car for around a month - so I am getting part 165906381 (relay in no 3) - as a starting fix... any suggestions if this fails? (am due to drive it back from Warrington from my GF's house back to mine in Sidcup Kent!!!) think Green Flag man will have a call?
any help vastly appreciated...
-
PS - there sounded like either crackling or ticking/clicking coming from somewhere behind the dash? - don't know if related?
-
Id also check your earth straps and battery terminals.
-
battery terminals were solid - earth straps? where are they?
-
Follow the negative battery lead. Thats the earth strap. Make sure its secure on both the chassis and the gearbox.

i had the same happen to me (not at 100mph)on my old 8v, i think
it will be the number 30 relay third from the left top row, it fixed my
car and only cost £10
-
mine was more like 70 actually...  - thanks Carl - I have ordered the part from Warrington VW - hopefully I can get home safely!!!!
-
sounds like what mine did shortly before the coil went a couple years back..
-
would you suggest that I try the relay first?
-
apparantly I have enquired about the coil and there are four of them??? something called a "coil pack" - confused!
-
i would try the relay first as its a common fault and its only £10,
then try coil after as its a bit more expensive,
or have the car plugged in and see what faults come up.
-
jesus christ, mine did my head in when it was cutting out at every junction or werever it wanted to at whatever speed so i took all the hoses and breathers off entirely cleaned them out (took 3 hours) all the pipes were blocked and choking the car up, bought new plugs and its been mint since not 1 problem at all!,
just a thought because everyone has had the cutting out problem theres a big thread in the mk3 forum (sticky at the top i think) take a look

Another thought is that it may be the crankshaft impulse sensor, this went on mine couple of months back - the car kept randomly cutting out whilst driving and when it did, i heard some clicking behind the dash (relay's i think...)
The only thing is, it's very expensive! VW want around £150 but i got mine from GSF for about £78. I had the VAGCom on it to find out what it is...
-
oh no!!! - wasn't relay no 30... replaced.... perfect for 180 miles then yup you guessed it - cut out then oil light came on - it's going back to the place I bought it tomorrow with a list of things that it could be... including crank sensor, cleaning breathers etc... thanks for the info guys this site is excellent.
