I just booked my track time for Donny north! On saturday the 16th of This month at 10.30 i will be let loose on the race track for 15minites and for some reasion, im now nervious as hell!!!
Anybody got any track tips or adivce? Any mods or maintance i should undertake before i go on the track?
-
Fluid levels and tyre pressures are likely to be VERY important I would say.
Good luck mate
-
Ah, one of my mates was sick on that track - quality!!
Aren't there any games you can use to get an idea of the track?
Take a bike helmet, and take out any sub or anything loose in the car. Maybe fit another set of bumpers that you arent precious about...
-
i could rip the front bumper off my spare Mk2 now you mention it. Ive been playing 24/7 for the last 2 weeks, does that count?
-
what game have you been playing?
true crime or gta dont really count...or ragging it round nurburgring in gt4...
I reckon it will prepare you for the corners there, but the differences in gradient at donington park is something you can't prepare for..
-
just remember: "the cars around you are being driven by muppets".

Forza motorsport, But if i wanted i could probally nap Toca racing driver off the misses (she loves that game) and race the donnington track on that
Its a non compatitive track day, More of a run what you brung day tied into a car show. Although some good laptimes would be nice. Id prefer just to keep safe and not come accross as a total noob in the way of other, more experenced drivers.
-
You'll get in their way, they'll shout, flash, wave and generally try and annoy you, but just remember, 'the track is full of idiots who can't drive and I must avoid them always' and you'll be ok mate...
-
Take a drum and bass or heavy metal cd.
makes you go faster.
-
you on a trak day???in your car??on youre own????OMG!!they best get out of the way!!
-
LOL oi, Watch it you lot
While were putting the new engine and tranny in the car were also doing all the nessary checks. Balancing the rear brake load spring, Flushing and replacing the brake fluid, coolent n such checking the bairings etc and taping up the lights.
In the process of contacting all the companies who have helped me in the past with cheap parts / labour and getting them to send stickers of graphics over so i can plaster the car with logos for the event. Got any golfgti.co.uk stickers JV?

yep:

;)

Any objection to me buying a set of these and re-producing them about 4times the size so i can run it along the side skirts or bottom of the doors? (have access to vinal cutter now (I THINK))
-
well that all depends on whether you'll embarress the site on the track or not!
-
LOL dude its RIPSPEED donny, Ill be surrounded by 1.2 novas and 1.1 corsas with sparco mudflaps, Generic shopping list stickers of companies who dont even make parts for that car and enaugh mesh to re-build the twin towers.
And besides, if i do cock it up and go off the track, everybody takes photos of wrecks at track days  Seriously tho, Its my first track day and i have a lot of respect for both race tracks and the people who run them regularly, Any dumbsh!t cocky attitude will be left at the show stand. From the paddock onwards i want to keep a clean head and have a really good, smooth session on the track to prove to people that im capable of handling it.
-
well....you go girl!!
-
Hope you have fun matey... try and set a dash cam up for us if you can :)
-
unfortunatly the rules state that you cant have a passanger with a hand held camera and i dont have a roll cage on the car. So unless anybody has one of those suction mounts i doubt we would be able to get a camera inside the car, Unless i recruite a passanger with a camera phone they can sneek in.
I will havever have people in the spectator area and paddock with cameras
-
Duct tape it to your helmet
-
lol in all seriousness my bucketseats are welded to the frame of the original seats. Me and blue removed the top pan and welded a bracket bolted under the bucket seats to the frame. This means the seats sit very high, which gives you a very good stance for driving as you cna see right to the end of the bonnet. However it also leaves very little clearence between your head and the roof, So how comfortable a helmet is gonna be while in those seats is somthing i need to work out :S
-
fileder just remember the force wont be with you!!!its just you, your car and them!lol
-
Sure the farce will be following him though as it is the Donny car show now moved after the mayhem when it used to be in Doncaster ;) your on for 15 minutes that'll be about 5 laps around donnington. Cornering either wide in tight out or tight in wide out watch the camber on the corners it's a bit odd after road driving.
Remember your not on a track when you leave Donny as racing lines don't work too well on main roads!!
Have fun and beware of all the other muppets that can't drive (anyone that's not you)
Indicate if you want people to pass and fit a high level brake light if you haven't got one, masking tape over the headlights to stop 'em cracking.
Warm your tyres up a bit not F1 stylee but don't hammer it until you've had a warm up lap or 2 also gives you chance to figure it out a bit.
Think that's about it!!

Thanks for the tips folks, Ive got about 4 A4pages written down with tips from people.
Went to see the car last night, Kev was just putting the finishing toutches on flushing the brake fluid and setting up the rear brakes. Problem is the pads are fairly worn now and the drilled disks are cracked. Im not sure if i can afford to fix this and the track day will defintly finish them off so i will probally have to bite the bullet on this one.
As for the engine, well the engine was halfway through behing dropped last night when i was there (around 10PM) then at midnight i get a picture message of my old engine sat on the floor in a heap. The new motor wont be as hard to remove as they will be pulling the whole front end off the doner car and just pulling hte motor out reguardless of what cables or wires get damaged (as were using all the wires of the odd engine) after the new lump is dropped theres simply a coolent flush and setting up the carbs so the car should be ready some time this afternoon with a bit of luck, However i dont mind if it overspills to the end of the weekend as long as the works done right.

Dirty coilovers, Might have to clean these
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/Fielder/DSC03371.jpg)
Engine crane? A famyard tractors much more efficent
Seeing the car like this almost braught a tear to my eyes!
The rest of the engine bay is rather dirty, So before donnington i might have to gunk it
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v603/Fielder/DSC03374.jpg)
while everybody is having a nice chat people start to realise a rather nasty smell (hence strac covering his nose), The next thing i realise is that im standing far too close to the heater jet and its burnt all my leg hairs (was wairing shorts!)
Despite being a former pit-crew macanic....im still not convinced
-
MEAN WHILE......BACK AT THE FARM!LOL
-
That is some engine crane mate bet it works well. I'm their all weekend i will get some pictures of you on the track if their is any novas on the track they normal get them off because it puts off the bigger more expenses cars
-
Never seen a rusty yellow Beaver before

All joking aside, I would normally take the front off ( grill ,rad ,slam panel) especially if I was using a lifting device like that as it'll give you far more room for manover.
-
ive just taken my engine out on my own out on the main road!!!without any lifting device just drop the block jack the front end up and drasg it out from underneath!!
-
yes, silkyballs is a real man, no need for lifting equipment...
you should see him change a wheel
-
I put a VR6 in this week and even with the front completely off it wasn't straight forward. But I guess it is a bigger engine.
Are you putting another 1.6 in?
-
Let me get this right. You taking the car round donnington with the following faults,ÂÂÂ
"Problem is the pads are fairly worn now and the drilled disks are cracked. Im not sure if i can afford to fix this and the track day will defintly finish them off so i will probally have to bite the bullet on this one."
Do you know how hard a track is on brakes??? Youl have serious brake fade before the second corner mate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After 4 or 5 corners id be suprised if you can stop at all
Take it very easy mate ffs!!!!!!!!!!
Stu
-
yes i am a real man stevie and yes i didnt need any lifting gear cos i pulled it out from underneath and it will go back the same way! :smug:
-

No 1.8 Driver lump (carbs and Cam in the next few months should put me around GTI performance.
The car gets pushed hard on the street (lots of roundabouts around these parts) and ive not had problems with brake fade, However ive bitten the bullet, Sold a few things on E-Gay and got my self some new disks and pads for the event.
Engines still not in. Ants been 'too buisy', Im not a happy bunny! if the cars not ready by friday i loose out on £95 in tickets and track time alone and me and my girlfriend miss out on probally the only time we are going to have away this year  So things are a little rushed. However my "You provide the graphics ill provide the car" advertising scheme has worked, As of thursday it will have a large number of company logos and phone numbers splashed down the side.
-
Well as some people said before, It seems taking the front off the car does make it easier.
Kev owns Cruise-herts, the car club my car is representing, If my car cant make it he looses one of his main cars for the show stand and the race track, Hes a very competant macanic who squeezed 350BHP out of a 1.4 RenaltR5 turbo lump and just built a Mk6Fiesta Cossworth for one of of our sponcer companies (ice and styling). Hes also fedup with how things are going so he managed to get the keys off of ant and is putting in some hours into my car today.
Problem is it was some how overlooked that my car has power steering....and the other car does not, So this means the pullys have to be moved from my old engine onto this new motor, also a siezed hub on my car has hindered things more so the hub from the doner car is going to have to be carried over. depending on how much progress can be made today some major over-night work might need to be put in over the following few days, I beleave (although im not sure) that the sheer size of this conversion has been over-looked by myself (as i was lead to beleave it was a simple block and tranny trade) and by others involved. Although the lenghts and effot kev is going to to get my car back on the road is amazing. The poor guy has alreayd put in a 6am-10pm shift at his work, Is working on my car all night and also has to re-spray his new Lexus Sourer in time for friday...Talk about deadlines!!!
-
I take it you know about bedding in the brakes before you hit the track otherwise you are going warp them.
-
thats a point youre gonna be doing a lot of cruising to get them bed in in time?when i put mine on befor the conversion im sure it said around five hundred miles was needed???dont quote me though as its been a long time!!
you should of had that engine out and the other one in a piece of cake!? i had mine out and in and running in 2 days thats including the big break conversion to boot!
-
fielder, you crack me up..........
-
Kev has done a cracking job today and has been working on it solid since 11am this morning phoning and texting me pictures every two hours so i know whats going on.
It seems my hubs have caused some problems as there siezed etc. So instead the disks and pads have been moved onto the doner cars brake setup and this will be moved along with the drive shafts onto my car. Ive spoken to him about bedding in times and we are going to swap the brakes over anyway, If im not happy with them by the time we get to the track we will switch them over. Im going with a group of about 15-20 macanics and panal beaters etc on friday night so we shouldnt have any problems (we will also have a support truck carrying a few show cars, the Show stands models, DJ equipment and a few other items).
The engines now out of the other car and sat next to mine. The engine will be dropped into my car tonight along with a new subframe. It appears when my car was reversed into it pushed hte bumpers back a little bit which has damaged the subframe. The bodyshop simply welded this togeather as the bolts threaded. Instead of this kev has removed the welds in favour of replacing anything damaged. Im in the process of prepping and primering my new grill ready for going to the paint shop to be painted black. Kev is currently eating his dinner at the moment, Then will head back to the farm to put in another 4 hours!
All that will be left tomorrow will be fluids, connecting up the vairious cables and wires etc and starting it up for the first time to make sure everythign works. The only downside is the 1.8 driver did not have PAS, so there are no mounting brackets for the power steering motor and pullys, Apparently it is possible to set this up but it will take another day and we will be cutting it REALLY thin. So instead the PAS will be ditched in favour for the manual steering rack and a text message being sent to my girlfriend saying "have taken PAS out of fielders car, He will have to use his muscles more now....Im sure you will enjoy that "
If i hear anything else ill add it to this thread. Also a chap from the local sign writers came today to take messurements of the car, a local friends Plumming buisness will have its name and phone number plastered down the side for the show
-
if youre changing the engine doesnt the origonal engine have the pas pump already on it? with belts etc?surely you can just unbolt the pump and swap it over?isnt it the same set up as a gti?
-
the doner car is a 1.8 driver. My car was originaly a 1.6CL. The 1.8 block does not come with the mounts for the PAS pump etc, There both the same age car so i dont think its an age thing. For some reasion its has also turned out my entire subframe has rusted through underneath. So this is being ripped out and replaced as well....Which is gonna cost me more money apparently.
Im currently halfway through painting a new de-badged grill for the show as well as the old one has snapped.
-
i have a power steering pump here with brakets!if youre in need but you'll have to fetch it as my car is without an engine at the mo give me a tenner you can have it
-
lol thanks for the offer dude but ill pass for now, My focus for the moment is just to get the car running and track ready, If im suffering from a lack of PAS by the end of the week ill let you know
-
lol ok dude its not going anywhere!
-
leave off the PAS. it's so much nicer to throw around without it, just more effort to park that's all.
non-pas with a 280mm steering wheel :D
-
sod that my arms would fall off!
-
hey silky i want that PAS thingy!!!!!! i know its good not having it when you're chucking around corners etc but i like to park it too!!!!!
-
babe youre new engine already has it on it!silly billy im not gonna get rid of the rack cos that will go on yours when we do the conversion along with the bigger master cylinder and servo so youve got better brakes!you'll need it with that new lump!
-
Car started up today for the first time.....Although it was only over the phone it had me drooling in antisipation....
-
Dude you need a video camera in the car you could gaffa tape it somewhere or trap it between the headrest and the seat on passenger side then gaffa it lool make sure were not looking at the roof lining tho dude
-
headrest? Oh those things practical cars have, I made the mistake of getting fixed back bucket seats and 3 point harnesses. Great for racing, Crap for going to the shops...
I might take the old dash out of the doner car, drill and bolt in a mounting bracket and try and put a camera in. Failing that im just gonna get sombody with a really good camera phone to sit shotgun and video it.
The Brake situation:
basically this project has run very far over budget, and i dont earn all that much so my plans to buy new brakes had to be put on hold. As it happens the disks are jammed onto the hubs which are also scezed so theres no way of taking them appart. Instead the hubs from the doner car have been swapped over, Unfortunatly this means i dont have EBC pads and Drilled / vented front disks anymore, I do however have brand new Standard brakes on teh car that i can run into the ground until next month. So thats solved the brake problem. Apparently my brake fluid was a thick black goop when they replaced it....My fault for not keeping up in Servicing the car properly. So im going to make sure i stay on top of services from now onwards.
Im picking the car up tonight. Once ive got it back im bringing it home, Replacing the front grill and removing all 4 wheels so i can give them a good clean for the show, On friday ive got to have my stuff packed and the car ready to leave for Hitchen at 6pm. We are meeting at the bodyshop that works closly with our car club, There we will pick up the rest of the convoy and the trucks (they have car transporters for the show cars etc) we will then start the two hour drive there (which is gonna be interesting as half the cars push over 400-600BHP)
Once we are there we have to sleep in the cars friday night and be up at 6am. All the cars have to be on the show stands by 8.30AM! I have to be at race control by 9.30AM! for a half hour briefing, In the mean time ill have sombody checking over the car. Then ive got 10 minites to warm my self up and the car. Then im on the track at 10.10 for 20minites.
Ive got detailed trackmaps and detailes on how to take each corner. Theres on called Coppice which is scaring me a little, Its a uphill straight leading into a tight corner. The corner sits under the summit of hte hill, So you cant see it...until its too late, If you havnt started braking before you can see the bend chances are your going off teh track
-
At least it isnt the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca!
Now stop getting scared!
-
Just a quick thing to add, all the PAS brackets etc will swap directly from your old lump to the 1.8. After all the 1.6 lump IS a 1.8 block, just with different internals ;)
You probably will have to clean out all the threads for the mounts however.
