Title: Fuse box replacement MK2 GTI 16v 1990
Post by: Lee Watson on 05 April 2006, 08:55
Hi all

Well I Have had a problem with my wipers and internal fan went to my local garage
and the problems seems that there is a small leak somewhere which is making the underside of the fuse box wet.
So I have obtained a second-hand one with a 3 month guarantee (Great) the only problem is when I tried to fit it last night and the fourth connection I tried to put in would not fit because there is a keyway which is cover up.

I checked the part number and there are the same.

Has anyone had the same problem?

And if so do I just file the keyway open?

Please help

Cheers

Lee

What I mean by keyway is that on the connector that goes into the rear of the box there is a bit that sticks out and on the hole in the fuse box there is a slot.

The keyway opens when you pull a clip at one end out :)

Edit: The problem is likly to be caused by the x-over relay, its normally a small metal one with 18 printed on it.  Switch on the wipoers and wiggle it about :)

Next fix the water leak, normally a leak on the fusebox is caused by the drainage holes under the plastic scuttle tray being blocked.  Clear these out and check the bonnet release cable grommet, smearing a ton of grease over it normally stops the leak.  In the mean time put a plastic bag over the top of the fusebox to deflect the worst of the water!
