Title: No Discount on GTI's Still?!
Post by: scottish69 on 05 April 2006, 07:32
Hi all,
I'm picking up my new GTI at the beginning of may (nice!). I was reading on here about hte number of you that have gotten your alloy upgrade or something for free... i didnt get any discount whatsoever on my options and the guy isnt even giving me glasses guide price for my celica! Well hes not giving me the top price even though its got new tyres and is in good nick hes said £10,000 but glasses this month is £10550 - and next month it will be £10400 cos its nearly three years old so its resiuals are fairly flat.

When i go this weekend to finalize money what should i be pushing for? I'd be particularly interested in what vwmaindealer has to say. I was thinking about at least trying for my top whack glasses guide price and then met paint thrown in - ideas/oppinions?

Cheers Guys!

Hiya!
Not evena discount on extras? I want to know if i should be at least pushing for the top glasses guide price for my car. Maybe met paitn for free too - they kind of have me over a barrell though cos ive got a 500 quid deposit in there now.... but id be willing to walk away if i thought i could get a much better deal somewhere else.

Ive currently got a celica t-sport - which sounds much more sporty and has a better driving position than the golf (in my oppinion) but i just thought the golf had more torque, and ultimateley quality than the celica.

So what deal should i be pushing for guys?

Hi Scottish69.

I had the same problem you currently face.

I purchased my GTI last September for a March delivery (06 plate). Although I was a loyal customer (previously purchased two other vehicles), I got no discount, despite spending a few quid short of £26K.

The only thing I did get was book price for my 4-Motion. I only got this because the dealer agreed this prior to me paying the £1K deposit, of which they had for nearly 6mths!

Although I would be surprised if you got anything off the GTI & options, I would have expected your dealer to offer you Glasses guide valuation for your Celica.

Until the GTI loses it's appeal, dealers are unlikely to offer any discounts. Why should they! The only alternative is to look on the internet, but you may find the vehicle is an import. Personally, this did not appeal to me as I would prefer dealling with an approved dealer.

I have noticed the price has slightly increased over the last few months. When did you place your order?

Hi there,
I am paying the higher price as i ordered after the price increase. To be honest he isnt far off the book price but i'll push for eat least that. He said 10200 for mine if the golf came in late june - but now he tells me its early may should it should be worth more i think... book price is 10550 for this month so the figure i want is around there somewhere....

I was thinking about asking for half price DSG but from what people are saying theres no chance! So it appears that discounts are very much the exception then?

Cheers,

no discounts... full stop.
I ordered a GTI in January - arriving next week or the week after  but don't even dream about a discount.  I have heard some people on this forum saying they have had discounts but they must have put  a gun to the stealers head!
Its not all bad news though.. the GTI is in demand and in short supply - so its good for residuals

I dont think its unreasonable i demand high book price for mine though - its in excellent condition after all - and its only a couple of hundred mroe than he initially offered?

If you're picking the car up early May you've obviously already ordered it yes?. If you've already ordered it, you're a bit late to start wanting extras from the dealer. We (my dealership) don't discount GTIs full stop and to be honest if someone came in a couple of weeks before they were due to collect the car and started asking for money off, i'd politely decline.

If your car books at £10400 and you've got £10000, you've done okay. The book doesn;t buy cars it only acts as a guide for the dealer. Any car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Assuming you haven't already ordered the car, i'd get them to chuck in paint protection for either half price or free. Even this would be pushing it at my dealership TBH.

As for half price DSG....

£3000 is a good saving.  I was gonna get an import but the reduced trade in value i would get in 3-4 years time would be far less than with a UK bought car changed my mind.

Post by: scottish69 on 27 April 2006, 15:32
Ive heard people say its an extra £1500 loss if you get an import, but ive saved more than that so im ok. Its a UK car - just not via UK stealers. I think if you were saving a lot less then there would be little point in getting an import yes.

What ae the other implications of buying an import? I.e. where do you go for a service? And if to a dealer, do they charge more, reduced cusomer service? Does it affect insurance? And how can you be sure it is truly UK spec. and not just right hand drive?

Hiya
Well i know its a UK one because i asked the sellers (motorprovider.co.uk) and asked several questions verifying this - like the presence of automatic climate control, no alarm upgrade required, and various other things. I can get it serviced at any VW garage because they sell services for a fixed price - shouldnt be more for an import. Not that they could tell unless they did a VIN check.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Scottish. The savings on money suit me as im just entering the big bad world of earning a 'living', its just difficult to put a price on the trust you can put into an official dealer. Having said that, this forum at times doesn't instill much confidence in the VW dealerships

I dont trust anyone - least of all people who are trying to flog me 9.2% apr finance and £300 rubbish paint protection schemes - like the delaers for example. They shove it down your throat.

MotorProvider seem decent, easy to talk to, and they know their stuff. And at the end of the day they are well cheap and didnt "shove anything down my throat" - if you know what i mean!

Theyve got GTI's in at £17695 for immediate delivery which is decent too. Mines going to be a while longer cos ive ordered one with leather/dsg etc.

By the way - if you end up gtting a gti from them give me a shout - i'll get £50! Id never recommend someone just for that though - im an honest person.

Went to a vauxhall dealership to look at the vxr and the b*st*rds made my wife cry because they treated us like sh*t! I promptly went away and paid a lot more for a better car somewhere else - and no torque steer!

Hope you didn't leave it at that!! Service like that should be stopped! I get the feeling that, because im young i'll go in and they won't take me seriously because they will assume I cant afford a GTI etc. etc. even although I'll be earning enough after graduating, really landed on my feet work wise! Dealerships really do have a bad reputation and Vauxhall seem intent to keep that up!
Title: Re: No Discount on GTI's Still?!
Post by: scottish69 on 27 April 2006, 20:57
I would personally stay away from a stealer - the import places - well motorprovider - seem much better service. At the end of the day youve still got your two years manufacturers warranty. And paying an extra 3k for dealer service with all its pressure and issues is a lot.

Vauxhall were rubbish - but they always have been. They seem to be a training ground for the inexperienced salesman OR where the crap ones end up!

Go wherever you feel comfortable at the end of the day - its a big decision to spend 20k on a car after all. Personal choice and all that!

Scottish, I have been looking at Motorprovder too, let us know how it all goes.  Did you get their finance option (if you don't mind me asking??)

Got quoted 10%APR at my local stealer, hes having a laugh!

I never take finance with a dealer - like u say they charge to high an APR. I'm going with Northern Rock for my loan 5.8%.

Will keep you posted.

I'll be earning a fair bit more but i'll be 4 weeks on, 4 weeks off working abroad with all expenses so I won't be able to spend my money for 6 months of the year. And i'll still be living with my folks  :embarassed: when im in the country for a while yet (mmmmm, mums cooking). I don't want a GTI........ I NEED a GTI.

Plus, i'll probably be eligable for my taxes back which is nice.

Moneys good but its definately not a career for most people. Just suits me.

OK it was a lot of hassle and waiting around but what a result!

Got two weeks to wait for my diamond black DSG/Leather/Cruise/Changer now!!!

Been down to my local dealer today to test driver the Polo GTI, and was quite impressed with it. Previously in November I test drove the Golf GTI and was pretty keen to do a deal, however there were no deals to be had. The dealership was no prepared to drop a penny, even offered to leave a deposit if they would add metalic paint, but they wouldn't budge.
However today (6 months on) things have changed considerably, the salesman started off by telling me he sold a Polo GTI the other week and they matched an internet price, and deals are also now available on the Golf ,although less discount than on the Polo.

Yeah roads in everyday use are not the best!! However there are some sweet twisty mountain roads an hour or so away

Also the AC on the Golf is a lot better than on the 2.8 Passat I've just got rid of.

But damn it is still hot!! 42C today and getting hotter.

One good thing is that speeding tickets are only £30 a pop with no points. Bad thing is nearly everybody else drive Landcruisers and the like, they'd go over me like I wasn't there!

had my car 2 weeks today

after selling my previous car i fancied something small nippy etc etc tried a used gti but it was 5 door with dsg without padles and 17 " monzas and i wanted paddles and 18" monzas !

the car was 21000 and i would have to buy the 18" wheels  i thought this was bit much so i tried my local VW stealer .

they had 2 used cars but they still were a high price for a used vehicle so i went inside sitting there was a slate grey GTI dsg with paddles and with 18" monzas and leather and 6 disc changer

list price was 24860 asked salesman if car was physically available now he said yes and i asked if we could deal he said yes but no discount!!   what deal then eh!!

i spoke to a local finance company who buys lots of cars if they could get the car for me ! they called back and we did a deal at 23860

so i got a grand off a new car  ordered it at 1 oclock and had it delivered to my home at 5 15 the same day

do u think i did ok
