My GTi has the following symptoms:
1. Slight coolant loss
2. Small amout of white gunge on dipstick
3. Signs of oil / water weeping around cylinder head
4. Slight drop in fuel consumption
No overheating and no misfire. Could it be anything else other than the head gasket starting to fail?
Been quoted £250 for a head gasket replacement by my local VW specialist. Thought this was a pretty good price!

well it could be a cracked/porous block! but the weeping from the head suggests otherwise. £250 is a good price considering

yup HG. £250 sound fair for a VR6. my old k series engined rover cost me £400

that'd be funny if it weren't so close to the truth....
-
Is that price for a gti or a vr6?
-
£250 is for the GTi.

Thats a good price. The parts from vw for a vr6 head gasket change are nearly that much!
-
Yeah - I thought it was a good price too. These guys did the timing chains/tensioners etc. on my VR recently, so I know they will do a good job. It's fixed price too, so no nasty surprises on the bill when I pick her up.
On the subject of head gaskets, I had a mate who worked for Lotus. They had a seriously visually impaired (ie only 20% vision in one eye, completely blind in the other) lad working for them doing an apprentiship. They had so many Elises in with blown head gaskets (God bless the K-series!), that this lad could do a complete change in under 2 hours without supervision! Apparently his spacial awareness was fantastic.
