Hi there
I've got a Golf with a rogered gearbox (lost it's oil, then did Birmingham-Surrey-birmingham... ouch!!!) and I'm desparately seeking a replacement. The trouble is that while I'm happy to fit it myself, I'm not sure what will be compatable with the clutch (and whatever else) I've got.
The current knackered tin of iron filings was a 5-speed manual, 020 type. The code on the bottom is AUG 31010. What exactly does the "020" refer to? The mounting bolt layout? The type of shaft (that goes into the clutch)?
Is there a page somewhere with a sorta matrix that will tell me what I can and can't fit to what engines/clutches? I know I may have to replace the clutch, though I'd rather not make extra work for myself. I usually learn stuff quickly but, more often than not, expensively!
I've been searching loads but I can feel a brain haemmorage from information overload coming on and I'm still no wiser. I just need to know so I can go and search with confidence and not get ripped off or buy something useless. Of course, if any reputable forum members have a suitable gearbox in good nick then please give me a shout!

Hi there..
Your box is an AUG box which is the 8v GTi box......
Wish I could help as I have a 2y box (16v) for sale at £50.....
Oh...information courtesy of RubJonny

I assume that you have an 8v gti from the box code AUG.
The 020 refers to the design of the box - I think most 020 boxes will bolt up with no problems, unless its a 16v box like the one that TwistedAspect has for sale (2y, think the clutch is different?). The code (AUG) refers to the gear ratios that the box has. Boxes out of golf drivers will fit (4T, ACL etc), but will have longer ratios, so you'll lose out on acceleration. The AUG has the same ratios as the ACD box so if you can find either of those at your scrappy then job done.

Yeah......the clutch for the 2Y box is different.....you would need a 16V clutch assembly as well as modifying the driveshaft flages to take the box I have.....this is why I stuck with a AUG box

Thanks for the input people :)
Yeah the 2y sounds tempting but I'd probably best stick with what I can fit with the minimum of fuss. Haynes lists 1.8L boxes as...
085 (ACD, AEN, 2Y, AUG, ATH or AVZ)
020 (9A)
Which has only added to the confusion, since mine has an AUG code *and* 020 on it... As for a scrappy, I was quoted £175 for a box... I told him to eff off in so many words.
Will an 8v "DFN" box fit? A mate might be able to grab one of those for me. Check my sig for the specs.

Try this website,
http://www.scirocco.org/gears/
it gives the codes and ratios of each gear. I'm not sure which model car thew DFN box is off, but judging by the ratios I wouldn't have said it was a GTi. Possibly one of the driver models somewhere along the line. It will work, you'll lose acceleration but gain top end speed.
Also, I think that must be a typo in the haynes manual, as the AUG, ATH, 2Y etc are defo 020 boxes.
Good luck.

I've seen the gear ratios on that site, but it didn't help with regards to what box fits what engines. Regardless, if you think it's for a GTi, then that's good enough for me! The box is from an 8-valve, so I'm hoping the driveshaft is the same. If not, no big deal, its only money!
I'll give it a whirl, and the faster (for a given RPM) ratios are exactly what I'm looking for. I do loads of motorway cruising, and I don't thrash it about town so the ratios suit me perfectly!
I'm told it's a Mk3 box though, should I worry?

All 020 boxes will bolt up, but the driveshafts and/or input shaft splines (for the clutch) will differ, what you want is an 8v GTI box from a MK2, for an easy bolt-on replacement.
A MK3 GTI box will be the same as a MK2 16v box, the input shaft & driveshaft flanges will be the wrong size. You could still use it if you fitted a 16v clutch and either 16v driveshafts or swap the flanges over from your old box.

I recently got a new gearbox for my 8v gti from http://www.not-escorts.co.uk/index.html for £50. Seems good to me, and they have very good feedback on ebay, so might be worth giving them a bell?
Be warned though, changing the gearbox is a royal pain in the arse!

Ignore Haynes, they are Bandits !

rubjonny: Sounds a bit complicated for me... I'll just go for an 8v box lke you said.
Nick1980: I'l give them a go, thanks!
Organisys: Yup, seems others agree too! I'll look out for something better when I'm back up here in a week or so.
Thanks again for all the help everyone!
