Title: Rear VW badge removal advise
Post by: sambo on 03 April 2006, 18:42
Thinking of taking the big round VW badge off the tailgate.

How is it fixed? is it pinned or screwed or just stuck on, will it need boddywork?

Cheers in advance, sam

mine was stuck on and there is a recess that will need to be filled if you want it smooth

Indeed they are just stuck on, but like you say there is the recess that will need filling and that can be a bastid of a job

on the same subject - I have my eye on a dealer 1.8 gti - I have noticed on the rear there is no GTI badge, just a "1.8" badge. Is this normal or has the original been removed, I intend to replace it and where can I get the dimensions so it goes in exactly the right place
I don't mean to be finicky!
Thank you

Do you mean the one one to the right of the VW roundel? I've never seen one with just a 1.8 badge but mask a line where it is peel it off and stick the new one on.

That was probably a 1.8 naturally aspirated GTi (125 bhp).

The 'plan' by VW for the N/A GTi's, as far as I'm aware, was to:-

Have (on the right as you look at the rear of the car), a GTi badge & either a 1.8 or 2.0 badge (depending on which engine, obviously), directly underneath the GTi badge.

However, the dealer numpties who were responsible for badging up the cars, did it any which way they felt like on the day/whatever badges 'Parts' had in stock on that day!
