Title: Going to Look at a mk4 GTI tonight....what to look out for?
Post by: Neaty on 03 April 2006, 16:40
Hello

My dad and I are going to look at a 5 door black 51 plate mark 4 GTI its up for sale at £6000 with 79,000 in the clock, cam belt has just been done i have been informed.

It is on a dealers forecort so my dad is going to test drive it tonight. I phoned the garage to find out some more info but the owner of the garage was out and the women who answered the phone didnt know her arse form her elbow and couldnt give me any more info, i.e which GTI it was, 8v, 20v or 20vt etc.

Anyway I was just after some pointers on what to check on mark 4's really. If anyone can be so kind.
Mileage is a tad high but I am never put off my mileage on a VW but what does 80k bring, and wear on suspension bushes etc or anything else for that matter

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

check everythings been done ie cambelt, waterpump etc. i would want to know that the rear washer works, all locks work with key, alarm works, it has all the keys, window clips been replaced with metal ones and the usual body work all matches up, look for leaks, if its got A/C make sure it works. i just bought a 2.0 and it should pull nicely low down in the gears.

there are loads and loads of 1.8 T around with decent miles, for good prices.......
my mate got a 150 bhp for £5750, 46K on the clock.

it goes like sh!te off a shovel, im almost tempted to trade in my oil burner  :undecided:

he had a 2.0 gti, hes sort of glad he got rid now.....POWER rules

Wouldn't buy a 2litre 8v.....Too thirsty for very little power. My mate has a 1.8t it's more powerful and more ecomical...stick to tdi's or 1.8t's

I think mines pretty good on petrol was getting 40mpg on the motorway. But it drinks more oil than fuel!
