I keep reading topics here and there and notice little comments making the 16v GTI to be a much better car than the 8v. Whats going on?
Its like when you ask little kid boy racers what they drive they say 1.0 litre corsa 16 valve!
Are some of you people (who keep putting the little comments in) not aware of the benefits of the 8v over the 16v. I thought this was a forum for vw golf entusiasts but it seems many people dont really have a clue about them!
I dont wanna sound like i am moaning but it its quite annoying- embarrasing almost.
Anyways, glad i got it off my chest!!!
-
this argument again! lol this has happened more times than i care to remember........
-
shut it you 8v slags
-
Well....I am an 8v owner and to be honest, the arguement is getting tired.....I don't think there is a right or a wrong answer as to which is better....it is really down to preference.
I personally love the 8v engine, simply because I know my way around it...no other reason. As most of the 8v and 16v motors owned by people on here are NOT what you would call a stock car, it is kind of irrelevant.
This is a forum for people that LOVE Golfs.....not a forum where people bicker about what is better in my mind.
-
i only joke by the way, they are both pretty slow tbh.
dont take things so seriously its the internet!!!
-
Both cars have historically been superb and have both good and bad points,  the only difference between the 8 & 16V is price and ideally the 8V has always had the tag of been the poor man's Gti,  i bought a 16v soley on preference for performance in mind but have no qualms with 8 valves
-
had loads of both... and other mk's... love em wether there fast or slow... how needs speed when you look that good?? how many other cars of that age do you see on the roads?? most have rotted or been crashed away....
must say though.... the 16v is quicker.... lol
but the 8v is better if you dont wanna kane the @rse of your car everywhere

Tim Styles- think everyone will agree is the daddy when it comes to golfs!
il quote exactly when i get chance but he says (not word for word but more or less)
The difference between a well modified 8v and a well modfied 16v is about 20bhp. although the torque and low down performance of the 8v more than makes up for it.
I aren't fighting the 8v corner or anything its just annoying when people make it out like the 16v is much better. Its like people are on about things they dont know enough about.
I'm not sure about the 8v being a poor mans golf either, when i buy my veedubs money isnt an issue i love them that much. i chose the 8v because i personally prefer them after owning both and driving dozens. It has nothing do with money at all.
Again, i am not fighting the 8v corner, nor am i saying its better etc- my original post was about people making out like the 8v was completely inferior to th 16v- how misinformed!
-
i reckon we are all a bunch of muppets! these are a poor mans car. ok they are relaiable but its just an old car... we really should aspire to greater things. i will say that we are at least cooler than all those wan@$s on vespas and lambretta scooters!! 45 yr olds riding mopeds? bwah ha ha ha ha haaa..
-
mines a driver not even a gti.. so there...
i don't think it matters.. poor mans car or not, better than being a "poor man" with an 8v than a "poor man" with a 1.0 fiat panda?! or metro?!
p.s i use the reference "Poor Man" for arguments sake, not that i think we are poor our good taste in carse more than makes up for it!? ... i kno i ampoor but im a student and thats a diff story!
han

thats complete bollox mate, these arguments will stop when its realised that the 16v has a better engine.  do newer cars come with two valves per cylinder or are they multi valved?
-
just for the record i don't read max power either (but is mine an 8v? i don't know... thought it was just a driver?)
-
shut it you 8v slags
GGGRRRRRR
   dont care maybe vr6 soon
-
whats newer cars got to do with it?
I thought we were on about the mk2 golf 8v and 16v engines?
Yeah things have progressed but whys that relevant to this?
Are you sayin the 1.6 diesel engine in the golf were brilliant too- just because newer diesel engines are?
HAN... Yes your car is 8v darlin'!
-
i didn't know... im not good at retaining information.. to many holes like a basket?!
come on boys stop rowing, we all love VW's... come on kiss and make up! - or don't.. what ever floats your boat!

newer cars are relevant because it is proving that the 16v engine is a technical advance over the 8v
and no old diesel engines are crap, everyone knows that  diesels have advanced a lot more than petrol engines over the last 20 years or so.

Regardless of dull arguement vis 16V vs 8V I think you'll find cars today have 16Vs to pass current emissions regs and not to make them quicker! And from a engineering point of view the KR is an inelegant solution to a need for more power quickly without having to design a whole new motor.

thats got something to do with it but is not the main reason, there are many factors you have to consider
-
hahahaha this is so funny i hav seen this argument so many times.
gonna stir it
8v's are blatantly better......
-
your a cock
its not like there is a huge difference between the two, but there is a difference.
-
but is not the main reason
What is then? A 25 year old Mk1 1.8 GTi puts out about 115bhp and a 1.6 VW 16V with all singing and dancing injection and ignition puts out about 105bhp from your local showroom. So much for progress..... A suitably tuned VW 1.6 could push out well over 150bhp but would struggle to pass the emissions and fuel efficiency tests. That's why GM replaced the Red Top 2L 16V with the Ecotech and why the Ecotech is harder to tune because the ports and combustion chambers have been computer designed for fuel efficiency and emissions and so tuning shops have a lot less to play with.

the old engine does not consider emissions in the same way as the new one, as is the case with economy. the cars are also aimed at different markets, so the engine will reflect this. when the multi valve head was first designed it was for performance, not for better emmissions, therefore it is not the reason for multi valve engines, emmissions/economy etc are improvements on an existing design, not the reason for the design.
-
i suppose the main reason is for efficiency
-
Goodnight.

Yawn, boring. New topic please.......................................
Is a 20V better that a 16v
