Title: Paint & Upholstery Protection
Post by: cartmell on 31 March 2006, 15:25
My GTi comes in May and one of the options the dealer was trying to sell me was paint and upholstery protection by a company called Scotts.  This gives a 10 year protection to new cars.  Has anybody else went for this option or similar (autoglym) and is it worth the extra £300 ish.

Thanks

I went for this and I think it is definetly worth it - this is the AutoGlym Lifeshine that is described on the Autoglym site.  My dealer is charging £245  and I have heard from VW MainDealer that you can negotiate on this as they have a bit off a profit margin / commission on the package - I didn't bother as I felt it a bit disgraceful to take a £50-75 commission off the poor guy when I was spending £22000.

Ive seen the autoglym lifeshine but my dealer is offering a similar one from Scotts.

I think the general rule of thumb with any of these paint protection systems, is if you don't like polishing your car, then they are worth it. As long as they are applied correctly by the dealer, they do work and keep the car looking good. Still worth negotiating with the dealer over price. You'll get at least 50 quid off, possibly 100 if you're feeling really nasty( it is do-able, I promise). The salesman is on commission (obviously) but is also targeted and paid on add-ons like supagard, lifeshine, scotts etc and he'll do a deal with you.  The trick with any negotiation though is not to come accross a smart @rse or aggressive with the salesman. That will not get you what you want.

You can now buy a similar product, uses "nano-tchnology" i know we do it so halfords and motosave probably willi in some form, ours is car plan and pretty inexpensive, worth a try tbh must admit i used the wheels cleaner and it does just take water from a little watering can to clean the crap off  :undecided:

... obviously the car has to be clean before you apply said products otherwise you'll seal dirt in! lol

Hi Cartmell

My valeter said he can come to Cumbria and do the kit for £150 all in.

You get the FULL AUTOGLYM LIFESHINE KIT on your motor, certificate, window sticker etc for that price!

If anyone else wants prices etc then just ask!

He charges £100 in the Merseyside area for a full AUTOGLYM LIFESHINE kit fully applied!

If your outside of the Merseyside area then the price goes up to cover his fuel costs - but even if your in London he only charges £200!

Cheers and good luck with your new motors every one!

Electronics     take me far away please... I have a degree in Physics but avoided electronics whenever I could and look where it got me - working as a mercenary - sorry, I mean contractor  - in the IT/Telecoms industry.  Currently working on a Broadband network project to convert all telephone lines to IP - computerise them.  So in 3 -5 years you will all get TV, High Speed Internet and internet telephone over your telephone line and mobile phone over wireless internet... well thats how its meant to end up and BT are spending £10 billion to do this... not seen much of that £10 billion myself unfortunately.

Well at least £21k of that money has ended up being used constuctively - on my Mk5 GTI

By the way I have ordered a 'stop-gap' spec... in anticipation of part-exing for an Anniversary Edition when one is released...

Pearlescent Black
Manual - don't like DSG
Highline MFA
Front Arm Rest
Smoking Pack - I don't smoke but it was free and maybe a future owner might appreciate it
3-Doors
Interlagos Cloth Interior
18" Alloys
Front Centre Armrest

With the next GTI I will probably get a lot more but still undecided whether the cloth seats are better than the leather ones...

What are you expecting from the anniversary edition illyun (whats different?)? When is it expected?
Title: Re: Paint & Upholstery Protection
Post by: illyun on 18 April 2006, 15:11
Well I am not sure what to expect really, but if the Mk4 Anniversary is anything to go by, then there will be extras... plus Volkswagen Driver tested it and it outshone - in terms of performance - even the 1.8T 180PS Mk4 GTI even though offically it was the same spec... may just be an anomaly but its good enough for me. Also the Anniversary Editions hold their prices better... as they are limited edition... It all may well be a marketing exercise, but it works.

It will coincide with the time im looking to order mine hopefully. But I dare-say the limited edition models will cost more and, depending on how im getting on with my new job, I would probably push it for an R32 instead. But now im really dreaming!!!
