Wheel bearing?
-
I've had wheel bearings go on me before but on the front wheels on two different car's and usually you can hear the bearing when travelling around 40mph moving the steering wheel side to side this makes the wheel bearing hum... i don't think this is the case as its fine when travelling its just when reversing...

Jack the car up, rock the rear wheels(with handbrake off) to check for free play. Also make sure wheel isn't binding and the brakes aren't seizes on.

check the hand brake cable hasn't come out of the clip holding it on the rear beam. it could of been rubbing all the time, but you haven't noticed it going faster. only when reversing slowly. and also the wheel would be pulling it closer in reverse.
my 2p :)
