aw a German plated GTI driving around today, im lucky enough to live near to VW HQ. Looked like it was packed full of press types. Left me standing on the dual cariageway. Think it looks od though.
-
You've just seen a MK5 GTi?
-
How u know it was a GTI? did i have the badges and alloys on??
unusual for them to go testing it with badges and alloys.. they normally cover everything up...
-
i saw one wear i live in swindon but it wasnt a gti i think it was a 1.6, i thought it looked nice though. i maybe well get one wen r they out in england? ???
-
spose you will tomrc seen as you have sooooo much much money aswell as havin a mk4 2.0, a 1.8t and a r32!!!, dream on matey!!! >:(
-
I also saw one yesterday on the M6
It was a German plate - dark blue colour
Have to say does not look nice - but it could be a grower ;D
-
Yep it was all badged up as a GTI, seen a couple now around Milton Keynes. Got a mate who works for VW and he has taken one out for a spin.!!
-
so what did your mate think of em justin??? any good? ;D
-

Sure it wsn't the FSi? This is the model thats doing the rounds with all the journalists at the mo
The GTi hasn't been launched anywhere yet, not even at a motor show - its world debut is due at the Paris motor show next year - the concept GTi was only previewed about three months ago!
-
Yep it was a GTI not an FSI, we are spoilt round here, got ASston Martins in our town, the vanquish was doing the rounds well before its launch. My mate thought it was pants, too big.
-
Cool, can he get any piccies of it that we can get up on the board?
From the look of the pictures we had from Auto Express it looked like VW had raided alfa's parts bin for the seats and wheels, would be keen to see what they've settled on ;)
Do you know what powerplant it had in it? Was it the 2.0fsi turbo? Very interested to see if 200 bhp is enough to lug that thing around!!
How about handling? The press have been impressed with boggo standard Mk5's, wondering of the Mk5 will set the title for hot-hatch crown alight!!
-
I thought the gti was an fsi?
-
Well, this is what I was thinking, as the concept GTi has only just been released, which is still a design study, and it isn't launched until Paris motor show next year.
-
I thought the gti is the 2.0 fsi turbo lump.
-
yeah, it is, the fsi thats doing the rounds at the moment is a normally aspirated jobbie
-
The fsi engines are sh!t hot for power and fuel economy.
-
I drove the new A3 2.0 FSi. It was crap. no power. very smooth, but sooo boring.
-
A bit like a golf gti 8v? ho ho ho :D
-
so the pics i saw in a car paper of the mk5 is a concept n wont look like that when its out coz i did not reckon much to the look of the concept
-
A bit like a golf gti 8v? ho ho ho
Jeez, u've even brought it in here.
-
Yep
-
cool.... argument XNET
-
it will be a dear car when they are released and this is what kills them off... this is why they dominated the hot hatch market in the early days there were loads of makes which were fast cheap and not that bad to insure now there bigger engines and no turbocharged cars. there heavy and are slow! and they cost a fortune!
vw can make small engined fast cars like the 1.8 t 225 bhp! but they dont want to do that! why give you an economical car when they can give you a 3.2 litre!
it was like when clarkson tested a mk1 gti to newer cars it wet all over them.... and he said has technology improved.........er no!
well it has but they are not using it properly!
-
I don't know why they don't run the 1.8t up to 225. It is virtually the same engine as the Audi Lump in the TT. I had a 2000 TT coupe for about 8 months. loved the power of it. If I'd had it longer I would have had it turned up a bit more probably but anyway. Now I see the 2003 is coming out with a 3.2 liter in it. I would like to see a comparison between the older 1.8t and the 3.2 in lines of power to weight. Probably not too much of a difference. In a car of it's size and weight I would rather have the 1.8 up front for me.
-
Personally, I reckon the new mk5 looks a bit too much like a 307. Sorry, not my cup of tea....
-
I think they will look different in the flesh than in photos. When the MK4 was coming out I saw pics of it in a magazine and though it looked pants but after seeing it in the flesh I like them. VW did rather get away from the light small version of the GTI when the introduced the MK3 but they made them more refined to attract more buyers. They alos introduced bigger engines to rest in between the towers. I doubt VW would sell many GTI's if they were still the mk2's (they'd sell 1 to me) It woiuld be cool if they had stuck to the MK2 body style with say the r32 drivetrain and mk3 interior. That would be nice. :)

any ideas how the bog standard 1.4/1.6 gose wife wants new car in feb might treat her (get her fat arse out of my vr6 more like raging it when its cold ill teach her lol) ;D

My girlfriend works at the VW/Audi HQ in Milton Keynes and I saw a couple parked up there when I picked her up from work. I do not like it at all it looks too much like a Peugeot 307.

Seen one ? - I saw 20 today !!. Happened to be having lunch at an upmarket country hotel restaurant in Hampshire today and there was a display of absolutely immaculate Golfs from the Mk1 to the Mk5. To the side was 20 or so Mk5s of different colours. The featured model (on the grass entrance) was a 1.9 TDI in what I would describe as similar to Tornado red. I understand the cars have been there for a few days (and a few days next week) I think it is a 'private' launch for journos. Had a close look at the 1.9 TDI - I must say I was impressed by the overall styling - much better in the flesh than in the photos I have seen. Internally was a bit tame (but it was a non leather etc) with quite a few minor hangovers from the Mk4 - interestingly the curved dash arrangement has been straightened out. Given time, I personally think it will be a success 'shape wise'.
Lucky old me !! - they were cleaning the 'test drive cars' presumably for tomorrow's batch of drivers. Regards, yt.
