Title: newbie golf owner needing some help urgently
Post by: cupra20v.t on 29 March 2006, 15:17
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am picking up my new mk3 golf gti 3dr tonight but it is missing the 2 side skirts or one is cracked and one is missing, has anyone had to replace these before and how much did they cost/ from where.(are the replacement ones cheap enough a mate said they were £15 ish from the dealers)

also what is the offset of the standard wheels as im planning to put coilovers on and either a set of 18inch rs4 alloys with an offset of et35, or a set a genuine tt competition alloys, will the competition alloys cause any rubbing when lowered 60mm, im expecting some rubbing from the 18's and will do some arch work(grinding) myself but if someone could point towards the right offset that i need, bearing in mind that i will be lowering the car about 400-60mm.

I will be buying all the bits off ebay tonight so if someone could help me in the mean timne that would be great.  cheers in advance

you can sometimes get the side trims off ebay but not sure how much they are new,
if your putting 18in alloys on your car lowered 60mm you will have to role the arches and it will not ride to well i would go for 17in max to keep it nice on the road,
if you fit audi tt comp alloys they fit straght on you will have to put 205 40 17 tyres and you will only get slight rubbing with the 60mm drop as i have on my car in the summer.

ok cool, so even if i get 18 inch with an et35 they will stiil rub? even if i grind away the lip and plastic inner arches that will get in the way?

i notice your car is a p reg and you dont have arches? did you remove them or was it bought like that? as i prefer the models with no arches. but sadly mine is a n reg.

If you're on about the lower side trims (go along the sill, one piece (looks like 2 though!!) between the front and back arches) they are about £22 each from the dealer IF they have them. Some have run out and I'm not sure if they're an 'order from Germany' jobber... I knocked the dealers price down a bit and got both for £40 plus the dreaded...

im not 100% what needs to be done if you fit the 18in alloys but i think there would be alot of arch work
if you lower the car 60mm on 18s,
my car came with arches i just took them off myself and side strips on the doors, ive replaced the side
strips with smooth painted ones, you can do it with yours no problem its just the side strips set me back
£110 second hand,

i bought a side strip last summer for £25 from the dealers.

If you fit 18" wheels with 35 profile tyres won't the radius be the same as 17" on 40 and 15" on 50?
sh!tty ride but same overall size?  :undecided:
