Hello..
Another question..
I have bought a mk2 16v GTI and i'm having a little problem with it starting, when i first bought the car on Sunday it started fine every morning up until today, the battery has loads of life init and the car is ticking over fine but not fireing up!! so i left it 2 mins and tried again, the car then fired up but very slowly, the revs went from 200 then to 300, 400, 500 etc.... 10000 but took about 5 seconds, usually it will fire up and the revs will go stright to about 1500 then come back down...
Its anoying me as the rest of the car is mint, i don't know if its going to start in the morning any help wouild be great.
The car is a black mk2 GTI 16v 1989, 90000 miles. F plate...
Thanks
Garry

Just wondering if the damps got into it with all this rain. Might be worth checking your distributer cap, leads etc. :-\
-
Its strange tho cos the other morning when it was frosty and really cold the car started with out a problem at all... wonder if the damp over the last couple of days has effected it...
thanks rich...

Any more idea's lads.... ;)

mine has this problem also, takes an age to start in the morning, but once its started its fine
i find that at first if i let it turn over a couple of times, then iginition off, then turn over again it will start immeaditily
ive been told that its something to do with the injectors being old & knackered - something to do with the pressure in the lines after being left overnight
-
Ok thanks for that... is there anyway of resolving the problem.. cleaning the injectors? etc....?

new ones

Sounds ignition rather than fuel related. Dizzy (Hall sender ?), plugs, leads.
Is it misfiring when it starts at really low revs ?
-
Could be fuel related..
Try turning the ignition on. Leave it 10 secs. Pump the pedal a couple of times then fire it up...
Thats what mine needs to start in the mornings!

I also had that problem. Turned out to be an electrical fault in the engine. That thing on the starter motor blew up after a month :(

Just found this on another forum.... ;D
-------------------
I had exactly the same problem, the thing that finally fixed it after replacing plug, leads, dizzy and rotar arm was a huge battery! My exsisting one was a 60 so i put a 95 on it(much bigger in size but still fits) and now it starts first time.
I think the problem is when its cold the cold start injector is injecting, so if you have a weak spark it doesn't ignite. After turning over for 20 secs the odd 'nearly' splutter is enough to evaporate the flooded cylinder and fire up. Bigger battery and new plugs etc will give it that strong spark to start. Mines fine now...
Should save you the embarrasment of pushing your valver...

gona give it ago...

Gaz - let us know how you get on as this seems to be a fairly familiar problem at the moment....
-
Yeah my poxy 16v does the same thing ive changed the cold start valve and the thermotime switch thing but its still the same. I have noticed that if i start the car for the first time latter in the day it starts no probs. It only plays up at 430am when i go to work lazy car. :-\

Just got thinking about this. I have an "MSD Blaster" high energy coil laying about. I was going to use it on a V8 I had years back in the U.S. but never did. Maybe I'll put that on there and see what happens.

i have had that problem also!!!
I changed the hall sender about £30 for Stuart at euro car parts, it has done it (not as bad anyway!) since!!
