Post by: x5pea on 08 May 2006, 21:40

IÂ’m moving in 2 weeks, so things have ground to a half.

The electrics were in pretty bad shape to have spent most of the time sorting out botched wiring
I have stripped the suspension and breaks off, axels and wishbones, all need to go back on to get the car rolling to move it :embarassed:

After a brief strip down then house move which meant the car had to be rebuilt, I've managed to get things moving again now that IÂ’ve settled into the new house.

Unfortunately IÂ’ve only got a single garage now, but canÂ’t have everything.

So today managed to get the engine out and the new block up onto an Engine Stand to be re-con'd.

IÂ’ve also updated the website with the new pics

A big mate of mine owns a Valeting and car wash centre and he came up today with some engine degreaser.

He foned and said "this stuff is the daddy, wait will you see it work" and he wasnÂ’t joking. Honestly if I didnÂ’t have such big plans for the car I would bother painting the engine bay, it did such a good job. Quick spray and leave for 5 mins, then rinse it off job done.

OK today The X5 was into BMW for another of its many many visits recently, so leaving the Employees holding the fort I spent some time removing the Dynamat, which the car is covered in, from the engine bay area.

Also removed the Battery tray and washer bottle holder ect.

The car is covered in this stuff

Picked up my Seats 2 day and took them bad boys straight to Transcal. They have done a lot of work for me in the past most recently in the X5 and did a first class retim, so obviously they were the only choice for the MK1 Project.

Had a long chat around colour choices and subtle mods as they are doing the dash and remaining interior...... Watch this space for one very special set of seats indeed.

Looking good - I was working on my Mk1 for 2 years. Got it on the road and drove it for a year. 1 week before it was coming off the road for the winter, I went into the back of someone. Now I need a new bonnet, N/S wing and slam-panel (front valence).

From your pics I can see a brand new slam panel - where did you get hold of it and how much? whats the fitting like? Bonnet and wing are easy to get hold of.

After spending the last 2 days down the Garage things have finally moved on  :D . The front and rear valance have been removed, arches have been dressed back and corrosion cut out. The Doors wings, bonnet and tailgate have been preped. After many many hours I've also managed to remove the Sound proofing from the WHOLE interior, which was a bloody nightmare. After a quick seeing to from the orbital sander the interior will be good to go...... 8)

Found a crazy amount of corrosion around the filler neck area in both the inner arch and rear quarter.

Chassis legs have been trimmed in preperation for the pannels to flush them off

ItÂ’s in a sorry state but I'm sure weel get there, at least I hope so

Going forward, the engine bay needs to be finished few mods and then primed

Post by: x5pea on 22 November 2006, 20:56
Over the last week the progress has slowed down a wee bit. Front and rear panels have been welded up in place, the rear quarter had been repaired along with the inner arches.

IÂ’ve seen a few people remove the underseal and paint the inner arch but most seem to stone chip then paint, however I wanted to go for as good a finish on the inner arch as the rest of the car. So there was no choice but to fill and smooth off, took ages and trying to recreate the lines to retain the original look was a nightmare.

The chassis legs have also been flushed off, templates took ages to make up but look the business when welded in.

Also spent the last few weeks buying up brand new parts, everything is being replaced with new, from fuse box to seals and grommets

IÂ’ve waited for ages for this picture, dreaming what the bay would look like when flushed off. The chassis legs are coming on now, still a little bit of work to go but not million miles away. The lines look so good and suit the engine bay I think, need to see how it looks in paint right enough but for now in over the moon.

Pics aint the best but you'll get the idea

Had some lengthy work to do in order to get the new seats in, passenger side was slightly easier than that of the driverÂ’s side. On both sides the runners were removed along with the cross box section, on the drivers side wee needed to take an inch out of the tunnel in order to fit the seat in. Once they were bolted up the looked the duggies and really suit the car, I canÂ’t wait to get the interior painted and get the seats trimmed and fitted now.

Also removed the box section for the rear seats from the top of the rear arch, as itÂ’s no longer required, plus it will clean up the inside

The rear pannel is also all welded up and filled ready for primer

I know itÂ’s been a while but I've been mega busy with Xmas and the new house.

The cars just about ready for Primer at the moment hopefully be in primer b4 the new years  .

The underside has all been stripped back filled and smoothed ect, the pics aint the best, the catty is the wrong colour for my camera

The inside is close to being finished aswell, again all repaired filled and rubbed down

Been into Transcal 2day and the seats are pretty much done looking spot on IMO. The first pic is closer to the colour (Think my flash was playing up). I wanted the BMW leather , but the supplier was sold out, so Robert at Transcal managed to get me a really close match with the Bentley Creama, which is more expensive but looks minted

Iv been hurtled round at great speen in my mates gt3 and the seats truely are, very comfy. Did you see the jetta in pvw the other month which had the gt3 seats, daes and console in? tbh i wasnt sure about the dash coz of how rounded it all was with the squareness of the car but the seats looked great.

What have people on e38 said about the sunroof? what are you doin with it?

U read that then eh!!

Never heard a word until someone posted up loads of neg comments, i prob dropped the ball on that one as i should have that area sorted. TBH im still not sure what im gonny do, the options are either weld it up (ie 1 new roof), another sunroof the same, a larger sunroof or a rag roof, at the moment i just cant decide.  Im not in a rush at the moment tho as the car is gettin primed then the bay, interior , underside and arches are getting painted........ then the engine etc is gowing in,  the rest of the car will be painted there after.

i always imagine it to be very elitist

im with you mate not 100% where to go from here and aye its an aftermarket wun

Ive got another nice 3dr MK1 that i can use as donor for the roof if need be or the money to throw at a fancy sunroof if need be, but im still not sure whats the right thing to do. I know people frown upon sunroofs but for me as long as it suits the car then im not fussed. I think the obvious solution it to whack on a new roof but thats what everyone would do........

been getting a bit of a neg comments on E38 for the sunroof

Really ! You do surprise me.

One person will criticise on there and all the other sheep tend to follow, it's pathetic really. You seem to know what you want out of this project so I say stick to your guns and do it as you want it.

I'm still not sure why there is so much negativity about a sunroof, I've got one on my Rallye and I wished it wasn't there the other month as the damn thing was leaking until I got a new seal.

I think an electric one would be quality. When doing a project like this, making an old car look new, why not add in modern touches too? The seats are out of a new car and no one will moan about those im sure, I dont see why wou shouldnt put in a sunroof from a newer car too! I say go for it! Your the one who's doin the work and goin to be sayin, yeah, thats my car, so as long as you can do that and be happy then thats all that matters!

They need a good polish and the pics aint the best but im sure ull get the idea  8)

As some of you may know IÂ’ve been having a few issues with the guy doing the chrome work so I was glad that they arrived. IÂ’m not however 100% on the quality of a few of the items so the saga continues. On the plus side I've found someone else to finish the remaining chrome work that has come highly recommended

OK so I bowed to the pressure and stumped up for a new roof. It was the best decision in the long run and I'm glad I did it now......

See pics

Also the inside has been finished and re soundproofed in the front. This stuff is the best money can buy and its can be primered and painted. DoesnÂ’t look the best just now, but after a clean and a few coats of paint and primer IÂ’m sure it will be spot on.

Out of interest - how have you smoothed the engine bay? Body Filler? If so, won't this crack/break up when the car is moving due to the flex of the car/chassis + heat from the engine?

However, the project looks good.............. keep the pic's coming. When are you painting the car?

lovely work, all that prep work has worked out well...

Regarding your brake system, are you going for a inside the mk1 brake servo on the steering rack, as I see you have smoothed off the engine bay where the braking arm to the brake servo normally goes, but you have left the drive side hole and plate in place.

I know I’ve disappeared off the radar recently but contery to the rumours I am still alive, my company hasn’t went bust nor have I sold the MK1 to some dude in England.

A mate of mine is recently back from Holland and was slightly concerned having heard the greatly exaggerated rumours at MIVW.

Before news of my death hits the Local news, My Mate who is painting the car had taken quite ill recently which prompted a delay in the project, I later realised that all hope of finishing the car for E38 (End of the season) were slim. I’ve also had a lot on with work recently, a house move, Family holiday, plus a new car for myself and the mrs on the horizon meant that i took the call to target finishing the car for next year due to a serious lack of time on my part.

So keep your eyes peeled as the MK1 will be finished and soon hopefully, like a great marketing campaign once announced the best things come to those who wait.

Chris

I ordered a load of parts from VW but a few were missing so I wasn’t able to fit a couple of bits, but made some progress.

I cleaned up the fuel tank and painted it body color along with the straps to hold it in place, had to remove the rubber strips but I just got some spray glue and stuck them back on after painting. Quite happy with the results, it was a bit of a rush job so I just painted it at home with aerosols (A chrome tank is on the cards for after Ultimate dubs)   B)

After getting a mounting kit from VW I also managed to fit the rear axle which I bought last year.

Fitted the front wishbones and ball joints

New Steering rack, I’m planning to get the mounts chromed but I just painted them body color for now.

Here’s better pic of my rear Strut Brace

I’m sort of stuck at the moment until I get my suspension, then I can get the rest of the running gear fitted and get the car onto its wheels and get the engine in.

OK so today didn’t quite go as expected. After getting let down with the borrowing of an engine hoist I had a long trip at early o’clock to a friend of a friend who offered to lend me his.

The day just went from bad to worse, I dropped the ball completely and didn’t have all the engine mounts so the engine is in the bay but not mounted.

We did get the clutch in and gear box on, Kr cams in, timing belt on and set up, a small consolation I suppose.

On a positive note I collected my wheels from the local TNT depot...........

Oops did I leave the covers on..........

Thank you to the Big Man, Lee and Mikey for lending a hand 2day

Today was more about running around like a muppet than getting any work done on the mk1, but i did spend loads of money and get some parts collected.

Dropped another fortune in VW on parts (Nuts Bolds, few mounts and a bonnet  ) £464 amazing how it all mounts up, Plus the following

Storm manifold
Brake kit (4pots and 285mm disks and pads, hoses etc )
Tyres for my wheels B)

Visited the trimmers and collected my seats at long last and dropped the pannels and dash off

Got the rubbers pressed into the engine mounts (Another thing that needs redone) ready for sticking the engine in 2morrow.

The bay and the inside has been redone and is getting baked over night so should be good to go in the morning

What degreaser was it? and can the general public buy it!?

Sadly I’ve hit a bit of a brick wall today with the painter. His booth has packed in this morning and I think it’s been the straw that broke the camel’s back so he’s decided it’s time to call it a day. Which leaves the project in a bit of a disaster, he’s agreed to finish the prep so that the car is ready for paint as this doesn’t require a booth but can’t take it any further.

I think I can safely say I won’t be making Ultimate Dubs, need to try and find a good painter to finish the car to the standard that has been maintained throughout the build. Early conversations with a few places locally aint looking good for the timescales so I think I'll be pulling out of UD's.

Anyone wanna buy a half done mk1 golf????? :(

Same here. The bodywork and interior are stunning, just the wheels let it down. Bentley wheels for the sake of having bentley wheels imo.
