Both windows on my 89 16v appear to have given up the ghost they sopmetimes work fine, sometimes go down but wont come back up sometimes dont work full stop, then they may work ok for a bit ??? any ideas whats wrong, its a 3dr as well

I take it they are leccy windows :D
Check the switches and the wires where they pass through the doors for dodgy connections first. It is more likely to be the motors though, they live in a damp environment inside the doors.
Try giving the motors a bang next time they stop working and see if they start up again.

sounds to me like you have a loose relay, my car used to do this till i changed the relay then it was fine, try pressing the relays whilst you use the windows
