Title: Semi-noob from the US
Post by: Rendy on 27 March 2006, 20:48
Hi All,
I'm currently in the US (just outside NYC) and may be coming to the UK in the near future.
I've managed to put it off for a year already
I have an '06 GLI (which has the specs of the MKV GTI with a boot) and an '02 B5 S4.
I'm planning on bringing the GLI with me if I do come. It's too new for me to sell (3 months) even if it's LHD.
This is my 5th VW/Audi and I was educated in Jamaica up to O Level when I made the switch to the US.
Looks like my initial residence will be either Chiswick or Egham.  I'm worrying about the car as I stress parking to avoid dents and dings.  So a garage or off street parking will be high on my list of priorities.
I've heard no good things about dealerships there, what are your thoughts on that?
I'm anal about service, maintenance (and detailing).  None of my cars are stock and all mods are thought out and tasteful.  No chrome (polished deep dish doesn't count ) and oem plus does it for me.
I'll have auto related questions later on but I just wanted to introduce myself for now.

Like I said, they look mostly stock.  But look at them as much as possible when their engines are off as all you'll be seeing on startup is their boots

Aww shucks , they get me home (quickly).
The MkIII just got sold to make way for the MKV
Unfortunately the only old creaky thing  allowed in my driveway is me!
Not to mention that maintenance was killing me.  Everything started going after the extended warranty ran out.  I spent almost $1200 in one week. Grrrrrrrr.

Thanx for the welcome folks.
2 questions now:
1. Will my smoked back lights be allowed?  They look dark in the daylight, but only block 20% of light only. They have no ambers or rear fog light.
2. Is the rear license plate surround going to be a problem?  I'm hoping that the US surround can be replaced with a Euro surround.  Any parts people here?  I'll check EKTA on my end.

smoked lights no worries.

Number plate will need to be changed, as i think ours are more elongated. Surrounds are avaliable for them though.

does your indicators just flash the whole of the red light? as apposed to having an orange lens for the indicator?

if so then i think they have to be changed! not sure how though they might do a euro equivelent

My indicators flash the whole of the red light.
I can get euro tails installed here in the US.
The reason for my question was that I would automatically tint them, but I wasn't sure about the reception of smoked tails in the UK.

welcome bro, and niiiice rides.

two things though,

1. Why go thru all the trouble of shipping your ride from here? it will cost a buttload of money, then you'll have to modifiy it to Euro spec's, if you have money like that just buy a right hand drive over there.   just wonderin'

2. i see you keep reffering to a "boot" what is that? and what does "arrow" mean?

sorry for the dumb questions, i'm a californian

I'll take a beating trying to sell a 3-6 month old car.  Muchless recouping the money on the cosmetic mods.
MKV Jetta's are pretty much Euro spec, they're modified futher for the US market.
Boot is trunk. You've got me on 'arrow'
We'll be shipping most of the furniture and household effects (which has already been estimated as less than 1/2 a container) so filling the other half of the container be fine.

welcome aboard! would the car not be harder to shift here when you come to sell it? Depends how much you'd lose in the states I guess....

Thanx all for the welcome  :embarassed:
I'm not worried about sale as my cars typically last me more than 8 years (and I don't know what I'm having for dinner tonight, so why worry about an event 8 years away ).
I'll break even with the S4 as my uncle will take it but I'll still miss it a lot.
My dealer tried to screw me over big time when I went in for an appraisal.
They have an identical one there with a sign saying 'excellent condition' with crappy paintwork, scratched leather, dirty engine, and high mileage for $34K USD; and was willing to offer me $22K USD.
After I stopped laughing, picked myself up off the floor, dusted my clothes etc., I reminded him that all his tech loved the care and condition of this car, but no go.
Oh well, I'll cheer up with a S3 in a bit.
