Title: Strong Smell of Pertol
Post by: mpgscott on 27 March 2006, 09:53
Hi,

I am getting a very strong smell of petrol on my 1992 mk3 8v gti when i come to a stop and let the car idle.  There does not appear to be a leak as far as i can see and if i work out what the mpg is it would agree.

Could this be the throttle body requiring a clean, if so whis would make the car lumpy when you come off the throttle.

Thanks
Mark

The blocked TB doesn't really make it lumpy but moreso just makes it hunt for revs and stall when you come to a standstill.  The leak could be coming from a number of places.  Important thing is not to drive it - ever seen Die Hard II?!?

My bet would be its leaking from the fuel rail.

As A7 UFO said have a look at the fuel rail where the hose goes up to the 5th injector as it is quite common for these to be the cause, but not always that obvious as the fuel often evaporates before you get the bonnet up . :undecided:

A new hose and clips normally sorts it .  ( but obvoiously don't disconnect the hose when the engines hot! :nerd: )
