Ive been thinking about this alot... sad isnt it!
-
havent enough experience with anything other than front really.. i keep hearing "bad things" (tm) about some rear wheel drive cars, particularly in the wet..
the only rear wheel drive car i've only driven is a mk2 mr2 t-bar when i was thinkin of getting one, it was quite good, but that was in the height of summer with the roof off :)
i'm voting FWD atm..

With a name like oversteer i thought you'd be into rearwheel drive!!
I guess its what you're used too. Front wheel drive scares me with the understeer you can get!
-
:P
guess i'm just used to understeer...
driving a mid engined rwd is quite fun :) but as i was only on a test drive i didnt throw it around much.. my passenger at the time claimed he could feel the way it handled more.. i felt a lot lot more comfortable + confident with my golf when i first took it out
-
Thats the thing. My Golf scares the sh!t out of me.
The car i had before was a Nissan 300ZX. Front engine rear wheel drive twin turbo with over 300hp!! But i knew where i was with it, used to get a tiny bit of understeer on corners which you could correct with more or less throttle.

Got to be 4 wheel drive :D
-
Is 4 wheel drive that much better?
Isnt it a compromise with the extra weight involved?
-
rear wheel drive mid engined

4 wheel drive provides the most grip, and faster 0-60 times.

most fun i ever had was in a c reg capri 2 litre, well slow but in the wet loads of fun!! especially with the tyres pumped up hard! but gonna have to fwd cos of dodgy roundabout moments dont really happen hehe! ;D

I always thought front engined rear wheel drive was best, any know how much work it would be to make a golf rear wheel drive, i heard of a escort rs turbo having it done ???

i seen a mk1 with a vr6 up front and a vr6 in the back all linked together so 4wd some years ago in a golf mag.
awesome conversion but a massive amount of work

I love the sure-footedness of 4WD, you can just throw them around and they'll rarely bite back - I reckon you'll drive it faster just 'cos you can.
Front wheel is fun, and a lot easier to manage, it makes for a lazier drive and pulls you round the corners nicely, especially good when the back end slides out
But for a proper edge of the seat thrill, you got to go with rear wheel drive, it'll keep you on your toes - I used to get the back end snaking in the first 3 gears on my old BMW.
It's horses for courses at the end of the day. What we need is something with a totally selectable drive system F/R/4WD
how much fun could that be!! good project for the budding auto-engineers out there

Rear wheel drive is more fun when its icy and your in the works van getting it broadside. ;)
-
Works Van is great fun, reverse it into the wall, and even the guv don't give a sh!t.

When I was in high school I had a 79 Chevy Camaro for a while. Big V8 engine, 4 speed, rear wheel drive. Burnouts are more fun in a rear wheel drive but I will take the handling of my Golf over that barge anytime. front wheel drive just powers through the turns better. I had an Eagle talon TSI for years that was all wheel drive though. Lot's of fun and stuck to the road like sh!t to a blanket. :)
