Title: Oil leak and smoking problems
Post by: was_ser on 26 March 2006, 16:12
I have a mk2 gti 8v Dig engine. Have had oil leaking problems, it seems that the oil leak is coming from the dipstick out the top. I have changed the Orange holder but oil is still coming out (pressure problems?). Also when I drive around it's fine. However if I say "boot" it then change gear blue smoke fills my rear view.Is this my Valves. Please note I am no mechanic so any help and the cost of the work being done would help greatly.

Doesn't sound great tbh. I had the blue smoke syndrome when I changed gear when flooring it, and am now waiting for an engine rebuild!
If smokes when idling and on start-up then prob stem seals, but blue smoke when giving it some welly often indicates piston ring troubles.
Good Luck!

I'd go with possible ring problems, especailly with oil blowing out past the dipstick!

But before you do anything get a dry then a wet compression test done & compare the results.  If the wet test is a big improvement over the dry then its your rings, if not then its the stem seals.

Cheers for the advice thought it wasn't going to be good news. Oil coming out the dipstick is so bad I can't drive it far.

Anyone know anyone around the Bromley/Croydon who might be able to help me think this.

Check that the crankcase and camcover breather pipes are all clear before you do anything else.

I took mine to The Phirm in Farnham, about 15 mins down the A3 from Guildford. The place was full of Mk1 and Mk2 Golfs and they are a really friendly bunch. They spent an hour talking me through what was wrong and how much it could cost me, after doing a compression test. They'll be doing my rebuild on my G60 once my Forged aluminium pistons arrive from the States
