:smiley:hello there again i got one for you. if i go to the scrap yard and i want a 8v exhaust system including manifold how do i tell if the gti in question is a 8 or 16v. and none of the funny replys like look at the badges because 99% of the time the badges have already been stripped off cheers
-
If the engine is still in the car, the 16v will have a big inlet manifold with DOHC written across it over the engine. If the engine is out of the car, there's not a lot of easily spottable features... The Manifolds are different shapes, but I can't describe the differences.... Sorry!
-
If the car has an aierel on the roof in a bee sting stylee, then chances are it was a 16v, if the aierel is on the wing, its an 8v
-
If it still has the rad in it find out the sizes because unless I'm wrong the 8v and 16v's arent the same size, I know this sounds a bit obvious but check the gauges the 16v speedo goes to 160 mph and has 8k on the rev counter instead of 7 in the 8v's.

if the downpipe is 1 piece to the silencer box under the middle of the car, its an 8v. If it has an extra silencer then its a 16v. To put it another way, an 8v system will have 2 silencers and a back box, and a 16v will have 3 silencers and a back box. That is unless its not a std system :)

The run out 8v has a bee sting mate.
-
If the distributor is on the front of the engine its an 8V, the 16v is mounted horizontally on the gearbox end of the cylinder head.

You sure?
Even if thats the case I'd put big money on at least 95% of mk2's with bee stings are valvers.
-
my run out 8v has a bee sting, ra's, rainbow stripe, half tints, etc etc and its an 8v run out. february 1992 reg.
-
if its quick its a 16v, if its slow its an 8v
-
If its in a scrappy they will both be slow, in fact so slow they will be stationary !
-
try launching it off the top of a pile of cars

Weird.....

It probably depends on what shells were available in the factory, VW probably had more 16v shells available than orders for thm, so many 8v GTIs got the bestings as well.
-
It's just ze Germans confusing matters, the valver has as said a horizontal distributor 8v is on the front. :)
-
The ariel thing could be a 3 door / 5 door thing as well.

I thought the rad's were the same on all the 1.8 mk2 Golf's??

nope the 8v is bigger (wider) the 16v is smaller (narrower) but double cored and diesel's have fooking massive radiators!
