Simple servicing and tuning cost a bum at the garage. I realise some members on this forum service and do bits and pieces on it their golfs saving themselves 100's & 100's of pounds each year.
Are there any short courses in car maintainence I can enrol on? If so, whereabout in Herts/Bucks are they held?
Thanking you in advance for your contributions.

Hi :)
forget classes! This forum will guide you through it if you like? :D
-
Well, I did think about it but thing is I haven't got any tools for such jobs other than a phillips screwdriver, he he he!! Fortunately for me I drive a VW Golf which spends most of its time on the road and not in the garage. But I'm inspired by you guys who have no background in car fixing but started from scratch to gain these skills. I recall someone, I think it might be Rich refering a member to the "Bentley manual". Would you advise I go down that route for guidance?
-
If you have no previous experience I would recommend going on a course to learn the basics. I was fortunate enought to do a 4 year engineering apprenticeship within the aircraft industry.
The Bentley is the bible. Its more like a workshop manual and gives you 10 times more info than Haynes.
At the end of the day, the best way to learn is to get stuck in there. You'll probably make mistakes and learn from them, but hopefully the forum can highlight most of the pitfalls for you.

wheres the best place to get the bentley manual/s?
-
Not checked but I think you can get them from Amazon.

this is the mk2 version

Nice one Gambit. Mine is on CDROM which I think is more preferable to the book version.........just going to have a look and see if they do it.
-
Don't bother with courses, get an old scrap golf, take it apart and put it back together again. All the training you will need.
-
Thanks for your advice Rich, Gambit, golfvr6, Blue MK2 etc. I have taken all your advice on board. Now I got to get the bible and acquire some basic skills.
Cheers.

Good luck mate, help is always at hand on here :-*
-
i think you can download that bentley manual on edonkey ;)
-
Is edonkey like kazaa?
-
yeah but better ;)
-
Nice one, I'll look into that later. I actually have the Mk2 Golf GTI Bentley on CDROM, but I'm curious to see if any others are available, especially for the Audi. Wouldn't mind one for the MK1 Golf too.
-

-
i've download a few of them... edonkeys great because i can paste a link up on here to the file and u can just copy the text into your "donkey" and it'll get it :)

I got the Audi one, 80 90 coupe and quattro. Very good but over 100 quid.

Cheers Overseer, if you could find that one that 'vr6 has just mentioned that would be superb.

^ if you're runnign edonkey u can simply copy that line into edonkey.. easy to pass around file links... there are lots of sites that just contain these links.. as its not illegal to just pass that link .. right?

-
Cheers overseer, I'll have a look at that tomorrow.......off out the door now.
-

-
Thanks Overseer. Don't have edonkey. But will try and info from another source if possible.
-
Downloaded the mitchell mk3 manual, not bad!
-
if you have the cables (i dont) the software for VAG-COM is on there
i keep meaning to check for the ETKA on there
-
I saw the cables for VAG.com on ebay for ?40, thats mad money, must be cheap to make them. Iknow its self powered by the car and has a switching box to convert to usb or RS232 port but that shouldn't be 40 bar.
-
right just lookin at this edonkey and share stuff could some one tell me what its all about and how it works??? is it free!!! thanks for any help
-
I spent some time last night looking into the edonkey. It appears to be very similar to kazaa, who I've been using up until now.......but better in that there seems to be a higher chance of finding what your looking for. Currently downloading some stuff so I'll see how I get on.
Couldn't open the relevant ports in my XP firewall (used their step be step instructions) so ended up having to temporarily disable it completely. :-\

cool
-
Well, so far I have downloaded Audi A4/S4 bentley manual and the Haynes VW Golf and Jetta service and repair manual. I'm currently downloading the latest ETKA.......mines a little out of date so should be useful.
