Hi
I want to buy a 1.8 mk4 gti. Looking online it seems the have a wood surround as standard. Is this on all of them and if so does anyone know if you can get a replacement one - aluminium or black - anything but the wood finish!!!
-
NAAAASTY isnt it?! lol i got rid of mines... you can get replacements but they are expensive, if you want the original aluminuim ones their off a golf anniverary or r32 and cost roughly £140? just for the centre consol part not inc door handles, ash tray etc. There are a few people who do these stick on aluminuim look kit for around £40-50 on ebay.

Cheers mate
What did you do about the ash trays etc ? and do you know if all 1.8 gti 's come with the wood trim?
-
you can get the ashtray cover as well they do 2 for the dash depending on whether you have air con or climate control plus they do door handles for 3 and 4 door models expensive though
-
sounds like a pain in the arse to be honest - ive noticed the V5 doesnt have any crappy wood trim - is the 1.8 Gti better or worse than the V5 - i know theres about 20bhp difference but dont know any more about it. - Any help would be good, cheers.
-
The 1.8t is far more tuneable
-
Luckily i got the whole lot of a mate, ash tray tape surround door handles foot pedals  he was breaking one and he owed me a favour or two  dont judge a car by its wood trim!! as gaz said there is a lot that can be done to a 1.8t plus as far as i know the V5 dont come with recaros?
-
1.8 T everytime. Don't forget than you can get standard (non-anniversary) 180 turbos as well as the 150's. Depending on which 150 we're talking about, then 220ish bhp is available for £400-£500!
You'd have to remortgage to get that much power out of a V5!

ps Look at www.awesome-gti.co.uk & www.vwspeed.co.uk for your yummy interior goodies!
-
to take the center and side door trims do u just wedge a flat headed screwdriver and lever them off pls
-
cheers for the advice = thinks thats decided it 1.8 gti it is then - thanks Ivor for those web sites - looks like i can change all the wood for aluminum which will look quality.
when you say get 200bhp out of it, is that just by chipping it ?
Anyway cheers - if anyone knows of someone wanting to get rid of a 2001 1.8 Gti in Black would be very interested.
-
It's not really a chip, it's the ECU being 're-mapped' to increase the power. Do a search!

V5 is all noise. They used to be known by dealers as the gentlemans GTI because it was only old people who bought them. Seriously! They were popular as autos as well because you couldn't get an auto GTI.
The engine does sound nice but the 1.8T is much more flexible.
just my tuppence
