Title: Front bumper sagging
Post by: JezGTI on 24 November 2003, 14:54
I have a 91 8v GTI and the front bumper is sagging at the sides.  Anyone else had this problem?  Can it be corrected and if so how?

Thanks

Jez

Your bumper clips on the bumper are broken. VAG should have these for next to nothing

Are these easy to fit?

OK, so the bumper clips are easy to fit to the bumper, but do I need to remove the bumper (or anything else for that matter) in order to do this job?

Thanks again Blue.

if the bumper clips on the inside of the bumper themselves are banjo'd, i.e. the lugs have been broke then you wont be able to get them from VAG

ill put up a pic in my gallery of what i mean

in the end i had to get some sheet tin and make new lugs for it

it was just bent into this shape

then riveted to the existing broken bracket

mine's the same on 1 side. I really need to sort it out as it knocks now and then on the wing. the brackets that got onto the wing you have to get from VW and they're ?2 something. If you've converted to big bumpers you'll probably have to drill another hole as the larger brackets have 2 points where they attach to the wing. after that they sit really flush against the wing. :)

Yeh I think they are screwed on.

The brackets clip into holes in the wing, then pins in the holes should stop them coming out.  The bumpers should slide over the brackets.  On a genuine VAG bumper I think there is some adjustment in the clips on the bumper.

Genuwine Bumpers have moulded in brackets. Well they where on mine. Aftermarket bumpers have screwed in brackets on the bumpers.

Thanks guys, appreciate your help

Will have a good luck this weekend, in order to carry out the necessary repair will I have to remove the bumper?

yes you will have to remove the bumper.

Unclip the indicators and fogs if you have them.

There are 2 17mm bolts that hold the bumper on.
Look under/up the front of the car, you you will see one bolt on either side.

Once these bolts are off the bumper should pull out nice and easy  ;D

one thing the front bumper screws form part of the cross brace that supports the engine if you remove them then your engine is essentially only supported by 2 small bolts on either end of the lower crossmember. so support your engine underneath with a bottle jack and a piece of wood. if you got factory fit bumpers there will prob be some small screws holding the palstics on down the bottom of each wing, undo these as well!  :)

Ah, that's good to know, could have had a bit of a disaster on my hands.  Thanks Veedub.
