Post by: GazB on 19 March 2006, 11:22
Hi, I'm not a MK3 owner and I am trying to sort a problem for a mate.

Does the Mk3 GTi have an OBD2 port and if so, where the fu@k is it

Cheers

depends on the year. If it has obd2 , remove the ashtray, to the left of the ashtray there's a cover that slides to the right. it's in there.

should be obd2 then. the little panel is just above the cigarette lighter. take the ashtray all the way out and the little panel should just slide over. the port is behind it.

What software would I need? I'm mainly interested in fault diagnosis, although real time engine information would be good.

Cheers,
Dave

Kr1s77,

What year is your car? Mine is a 'L' reg (or will be when I get it off my mate) so I'm not sure whether what connector I'll need.

mines a 97 P reg, i want it to clear faults n fault diagnosis (eg. able to tell me which speed sensor has gone - abs light on)!!!

had a look on the web for software and seen vag-com software selling for £75..(with full support)...

is that what it goes for??    anyone know where it is cheaper or where to get it??

Exactly same reason I got mine!

I bought a USB one off ebay, if you can get it to work, you are a better man than me and I have been working with diagnostics and BMW engineers for over 12 months now and still cant get it to work!

Instead go for the serial connection, its far more reliable and apparently gives better statistics...?

You can actually get a free version of VAG-COM from www.ross-tech.com (http://www.ross-tech.com), doesnt have full capabilities, but you can at least read DTCs and clear them. (If you are a peer to peer person, there are some versions out there with a crack, but i have been unsuccessful to date)
