Title: Wheel Help
Post by: JMallows on 16 March 2006, 22:09
Hi all.. Just after a bit of advice with wheels. My bro has a MK4 golf, and wants to upgrade the wheels. Thing is, i'm not really sure what size he needs (5.5J and that sort of number...!!)? He dont want to spend a huge amount (who doesnt :rolleyes: )and doesnt want any work done on the arches, so i guess 16 inch max? Or can you go to 17 with a MK4??

Finally, can anyone recommend any good places to get such wheels?

Many thanks

think you can go up to 20" on mk4 without arch mod's, definatly 19's. dunno abou tat and not wanting to spend loads of money though       :shocked:

16s, 17s, 18s maybe even 19s i think are no problem but you want to stick to low profile tyres on alloys over 18s. Plus might look too high with standard suspension so might want to lower it but this is when the problems occur depending how low you go as driveshafts can catch on anit roll bars. 17s in replicas are all pretty cheap if not on the common side but depends what you are after. Ebay will offer all the replicas and more. Pic up either PVW or the Golf+ magazing which are full of adverts(and not much else :grin:) or wait until a show like GTi international for a bargain.

Ideally, for 16's you want;  6.5J x 16" - PCD 5 x 100 - ET 42; 205/55/16 tyres.

17's =  7J x 17" - PCD 5 x 100 - ET 38;  215/45/17 tyres.

18's =  7.5J x 18" - PCD 5 x 100 - ET 38;  225/40/18 tyres.

19's look too big on a car as small as the Golf, IMO.

I thought that if you lowered it more than 30mm, then you get driveshatfs fouling the ARB's??? :undecided:

Mine is on coilovers and its lowered 80mm on the front and my driveshafts dont rub :undecided:,  There are different sized driveshafts after a certain year tho

I live down in Salisbury. Did have a look at big boys toys... but they arent for me, so cant really say! I'm not sure he's likly to want to lower it... yet anyway!!

If its of any interest to the driveshaft thjing, his car is a V reg 1.6S.
