I just picked up a new project on saturday (a 4dr mk2 8v for £50) and after driving that home and having had a troublesome couple of weeks with my car im really starting to consider putting my engine back to standard. It made a really nice change to be able to just thrash the hell out of it and not worry about it going wrong and the onboard computer was still reading over 30mpg.
I do love the performance of the turbo, it really can move but most of the time i am too worried about breaking it to really enjoy it, and even driving sensibly (well fairly ) i rarely see better than 23mpg. That said the whoosh of the turbo is very addictive and i never get bored of the head turning ability of the dump valve!!
Really undecided so thought i would see what you all thought? :undecided:
Martin
(will put some details up of my new project when i get some pics sorted!!)

Drive the turbo like that until it does break then put the 8 valve in and all the turbo gubbins jobs a gud un! why not keep both one as a daily driver and the other for shows and sunny weekends? that's a good compromise :)
-
^^^ Sounds like a plan! keep the turbo for special occasions, then you wont have the chance to break it!
-
the new one i bought is a bit of a long term project, i had bought it with the intention of breaking it for parts (it needs a bit of welding and an exhaust) but my girlfriend has decided that she wants another Golf so wants me to do it up for her (she wants it resprayed pink ) so she will have that one. Will probably sell her mondeo as we cant really afford to run 3 cars. There's no way im gonna get rid of my car cos i love it, was just considering whether having cheaper insurance, better reliability and better fuel economy would be worth losing the turbo for?

What he said don't be silly!!!!

  Your probably right, every now and then when a few things go wrong i get in a turbo stress with it and either wanna sell it, rip out the engine, or give it a basil faulty style beating!! Suppose i could always buy a set of steelies  and let my girlfreind use it during the day then use hers to commute (as long as she does not get it sprayed pink ), then again just being used for the school run would probably be worse for it than commuting to work as wouldnt get time to warm up properly?
-
Why not get one of those in-car boost adjusters  then you could turn the boost down for the cummute and back up when you don't mind breaking it
-
^^^ I think it has to be on proper turbo technics/or similar management to be able to do that with. So then the fueling is right for the amount of boost you adjust it to. :nerd:

Neaty what bhp is ur turbo running? I just went from a mk4 gti T 180bhp to Gt Tdi 130, and I gotta say there aint much diff in performance. I was really worried about loosing all that power but the tdi feels just as quick, up untill about a ton which u dont do usually ne way. The the tdi dies out in revs towards 3500rpm (only goes up to 5000 tho) but the turbo at that point is whistling like a b!tch, sweet! Plus u get good economy. But its ur choice mate.
-
^^^ I dnt have one mate, I wish I did ! do you mean a 20vt or a mark 2 turbo, its martinb that has the mark 2 8valve turbo.
I am yet to drive either the TDI 130 or the 20vt 150, i wouldnt mind have a dig tbh!
