Hello,
I know very little about cars and I have bought a Gold 2.0 GTi (W reg). I have a few lttle quirks that I'm not sure about and posted them in the new members forum. I have been advised to put them to you lot as it's a Mark 4. If anyone can help with the below probs, it would be a great help.
1. The back screen wiper has a mind of it's own, is this common?
2. The back screen wiper does not squirt (front does), what could this be? (Another member has suggested that the hose may of disconnected in car, will check soon).
3. The CD player does not continue automatically once I have started the car. I have to either, turn the radio on/off, eject the cd and re-insert or press FM then CD. Is this common?
4. All four brake discs as pads have been changed by previous owner but need the Brake Disc indication reset. how can I do this without going to garage? Can I short it with a paper clip or something?
5. I've told the starter motor is on the way out (makes a werrrrring noise after starting). Been told it make keep going for a while and could change myself. Is this likely as I'm such a novice?
Any help with the above points would be great.
Many thanks

1. Not sure might be a relay or motor
2. sounds like a clip on the hose, check for dampness in the boot under trim etc
3. Not sure
4. What do you mean by the brake indicator if it has wear indicators wouldnt it just reset itself once new ones are fitted.
5. Should be pretty easy disconnect the battery lead, a few bolts and some wire connections.
If your not confident with anything get yourself a haynes manual and should all be there with enough info to do it all yourself.
How much did you pay for yours and whats it like i just picked up a 2.0gti aswell?

both of my Golf's make a grauncy sort of noise when starting. Think the starter motors are fine though, and they start first time so not worried.

2. I'm sure there is a known problem where the rear wash pipe can come off, particularly when cold, freezes and pushes itself off.
4. I think you may need the old VAGCOM to reset..........latches on until you reset it.
-
1) it's supposed to be intermittent.. or is it more than that?
2) easy fix would be if the pipe has popped off the jet. couple of screws and some clips is all there is holding on the interior hatch panel, you'll see whats going on from there. its worth cleaning up anyway.
bad news would be if the pipe was broken somewhere along its length. if it was just split you'd still get a dribble out of the jet.
3) never had that happen, is it a bootchanger ? single slot ? 6 disc in-dash changer ? is it a standard vw unit? etc etc
4) disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes might clear it. if not then you need to find someone with vagcom (diagnostics software that you can run from your own laptop)
5) hard to tell from that description. how loud is this "whirring" ? and how long does it go on for once the car is started ?

1. Mine does this... goes across the back screen, then comes back in stages!
2. Yep same, it does seem fairly common though, there was a thread on here the other day about it.
...
5. As above, mine does that too. Seems to be another common problem, doesn't bother me as it always starts, so wouldn't worry too much.
Get some pictures up of the car.

hi there,
in answer to Q.2.-
common problem unfortunately  mine went and i traced it to the joint between the boot lid and the rest of the car.....inside the rubber tubing that carries all the wires to the boot lid....if you open the boot, you'll know what i mean when you see it!
cant help with the others tho' sorry :undecided: but the wiper sounds like the motor is coooked

Thanks for all your replies.
Gonna get sel' a Haynes and get see what I can do.
The back wiper seems to of settled down now, so not too concerned.
Will try to get a look for the hose this weekend.
The CD player is a standard VW single slot.
The whirring is not particulary load, about as load as when starting up. Goes on for about 1 sec after releasing the key.
Thanks again for help.
Will post again with any progress.

I have had cars in the past that whir when the starter key is released - never caused any problems though.

Ive got the rear washer problem but when i looked in rear panel i couldnt find any signs of leaking (rear lock and exterior cover are knackered tho) and no breakages in pipe and no clips missing??
ive got number 5 aswell, and recently had flywheel done where i was told its just the retracting mechanism and as long as it still starts it int a problem.
just down right annoying
