Title: Best HT & Sparks, 16v?
Post by: Ant on 14 March 2006, 14:01
What would you say are the best HT leads and spark plugs to get for a Mk2 16v (89).

My HT leads are definatly shagged, and it's dropping the performance of the engine (kit needs to include the king lead).

My current sparks are the ones with the three prongs, an they are probably still ok, but with bad HT leads I might replace them anyway.

The important thing I really need to know, is where do I get them?

I wouldn't bother with any of these fancy leads as i've never noticed any difference, i always go for the OEM leads and replace them when they start looking a bit iffy

for plugs you cant beat bosch super 4's

( :nerd: change the leads and those old plugs will almost certainly die soon after)

OEM HT leads copper core ones - £77.

Spark plugs not really an issue, nothing happens as all it takes is a single spark to ignite the mixture. So anything is good enough.

Where do you get these OEM leads from VW Main $tealers?

I only ask cause shops or web only seem to list 'performance' leads, and I'd rather pay for a decent set so don't want to get a set from Halfords.

OEM leads from any good autofactors, use GSF or ECP though and they should be cheaper.

The plugs as i say are not really that important, as long as they spark then it's all good. I only have single point spark plugs and they are as good as the 3s and 4s bosch are now doing.

www.eurocarparts.com £28.95

Its true what slick says about the plugs, except that the 3 or 4 electrode ones last a fair bit longer.

Bosch 4's are guaranteed for a year so i replace them annually as part of my service, the leads should last a good few years as long as they don't get damaged

I just bought a set for mine from GSF, I paid £59 for the best quality leads and I'm glad I did. I bought one of the cheap sets in the past and the top of the plug tubes weren't at all rigid so it was difficult to feel whether the cap was fully on the plug. I think the ones I just bought are made by BBT and they are equally as good quality as the OEM ones. For plugs I just bunged single electrode bosch plugs in, the ones I took out were triple electrode but I haven't actually driven the car yet to comment on any differences.

Check out AVS for service parts, almost always works out cheapest when you factor in postage :)

Again I got to agree with RJ: Beru are by far the best leads I've used. Made a huge difference to all round performance and ace quality.

 OEM = Original Equipment manufacturer, in the case of ignition leads that just happens to be BERU   :smug:
