Post by: GolfGL on 12 March 2006, 19:56
Hi with the 2.0 gti's were they not all fitted with the front and rear gti badges? If so when did they start putting them on.
Cheers

Reason i asked was im lookin at a 2.0(1999) which are always listed as gti's in autotrader, yet the one im looking at only has a rear 2.0 and golf badge but im sure i seen 2.0's with the gti badge.

I'd forgotton about this one....

As the UK was one of the few markets to get the 2.0 GTI, they were not badged as GTIs from the factory. The cars came off the transporters into the dealership badged as a 2.0. The dealer then had to (in accordance with VW instructions) stick a chrome GTI badge on the back and remove the 2.0 badge. This has unfortunately meant that over the years, there has been some creativity with badge layout and you'll often see 2.0GTI, 2.0 GTI, GTI 2.0, 2.0, GTI etc etc. When I used to sell a new 2.0 GTI, I used to ask the customer how they wanted it badged. Many used to opt for leaving the GTI badge off altogether to make it less attractive to low-lifes!

Hope this answers your question.

You will find that the masses of new 2.0 GTis sold via the car supermarkets / import brokers would not have put a GTi sticker on and it would remain as 2.0 on the rump.

2.0 Trendline I think is the Euro model name.

Why dont you go for a 1.8T, as its quicker and better on fuel (depending on how you drive it ).

Cheers guys, and of course id want a 1.8t but at the moment the 2.0 will do mainly due to insurance. As its the first car id be on my own its £900  for the 2.0 but something stupid like £2000+ for the turbo. I could buy a high mileage one but my mates just dont the same and bought an early 1.8t(150) for £4000 and its a complete dog couldnt even beat a 1.4 16v polo .

I would suggst that there is something wrong with your mates 1.8t then Golfcl. Even with a flat 150bhp it should p1ss all over any polo (unless its been chipped).

i bought my 2.0 as i couldnt afford the expensive insurance for a 1.8T, it all depends on where you live as well, i live in a sh1te area so my insurance will always be farely high

as for the badges, i bought my front anni one off of ebay and you can also get rear gti badges off there as well for a good price

Or do as I did, when you go to a show, buy a back gti badge and a front anni badge.  Take the letters off the anni badge, trim the back down and then stick on the new letters.

Getting the badges from a show aswell, it only cost me a tenner all in and 10 mins of my time

Thanks all for clearing up the badge stuff. Yes defo something wrong with my mates 1.8t probably something to do with loads of owners and the 120,000 miles on the clock.
Handsyboy you are very lucky with that quote although im a year younger so maybe il try once i got 1 years NCB. Area is very important as apparently im in an area rated 6 out of 7 and 7 being the worst :embarassed:. Strange thing is im in an area surrounded by pensioners and mature families but close to croydon.
