Title: Increased performance - Advice!
Post by: BenjiC on 11 March 2006, 19:45
Any advice on things I can do to my car to increase the performance without spending too much?

I'm going to take it in to be looked at/ remapped eventually but that may not be for a while. I'm thinking air filters etc?

My car is due a service so was hoping to get stuff done then if poss - I'm using a local indep. mobile mechanic to service so if I buy the stuff I'm sure he'll do the rest....

There are a million and one things u can do to change the performance of the Golf mate, and once u start tweeking you probably won't stop for a long time so get ready to be continually looking for your next mod...having said that its all fun so lets go !!!

Depending on your tastes air filters can change the sound of your car quite a bit, so be wary of cheaper versions and stick to big brand names such as K&N. I can't tell from your pic if your exhaust system is standard or not but this is one thing u can change in preparation for your re-map further down the line. The exhaust won't make a noticeable power difference now but a brand like Milltek will make your car sound sweet and will give u more significant power gains after the re-map.

Cheers for the advice.
I'm not too keen on getting anything that makes the engine sound louder - just faster!
I fully intend to get a remap I've seen by awesomegti which takes the bhp to 197-200+, but that won't be for a while.
How much difference, if any would k&n air filters make? I've heard they make the power smoother rather than the peaky style of the turbo now - is that true?

I believe that the Green cotton filters are the panel filters of choice on the MK4, if not go for an induction

I bought a fresh cold air induction kit, and all it really does is make the engine a bit more noisy, and makes a swooshing noise when you change gear, due to the pressure being amplified caused by the intake tube. Not sure if it wiould make more difference if the engine was remapped or not.
