Does anyone know an insurer who will let me use my NCD on one car for insuring a second car ?
My current insurer won't let me add my Golf to my policy :( even though I am the only named driver and can only possibly drive one vehicle at a time.
Failing that any ideas for insuring a MK2 16v with 0 years NCD ?
-
I had the same problem with my cabrio.........its ridiculous and an absolute con as you can only drive one car at a time.
I ended up taking out classic car insurance with footman james, worked out as ?107 fully comp (limited mileage)
-
just say you break the limited milage. Can the insurance find out?
-
i had same prob too
had two take out another policy for a car i rarely used

ive often wondered that
i cant see how if they have no log of your milage
-

They asked for a copy of my MOT certificate so they could find out from the mileage on there. You don't have to have the limited mileage, it just helps to bring the premium down and I only use the car in the summer for fun and shows so its not a problem.

the company i work for rents an outbuilding, and a guy that works for them (a web designer) has car trader insurance, he runs about 5/6 cars he has lots of cars.. a nice honda import, and some lil fast modded ones like novas, minis, etc etc... might be worth looking into?
-
I also have a traders insurance policy. Usefull for driving "enhanced" mk1 golfs ;). The policy covers me for any car, third party only.

Thanks for the replies.
The problem I see with a trader policy (apart from the cost) is the fire & theft insurance for both cars. Is this included ?
RichandHazel - could you give me the number for footman James - I've never heard of them. What is the criteria for a classic policy, age and type of vehicle ?
My current co. want ?700 to insure my Golf. The best quote I could get with 0 years NCD is ?480. All tpft.

how much is a trader policy?

A diffrent set of clocks should do the trick. Take the car to the MOT bay with diffrent clocks under the limeted milage and get it done without altering your orignal clocks. This is for much cheaper insurance. OK OK ITS A SKAM! :P

DONT DO IT. I WAS JOKING :-X

I'll go one better and give you the website:-

The thing you want ideally is a big introductory discount.
We got one on the Nissan for S2N and it worked out at about 15% on top of the new NCB i've started for it.
Or somet like that.

Ive heard a Pass+ Test is worth 1 years no claim. ???
i dont rekon i could even pass the standard test these days
my gf just passed on her third attempt, what a nightmare!
i would dread having to take my test these days
-
blue mk2, it is, as is advanced driver training, being 18, i've tried all the tricks, pass+ knocked off about 20%!! and im doing advanced driver atm, supposed to knock off about another 15% and then i will finally be able to insure a mk1 1.6 gti. Also look out for deals, because the only way i will manage to get me , 18 yr old male, insured on that, is with a deal.
Also, pass plus is really really easy, its 6 hours of driving with a pass+ instructor, in 6 diffferent situations, like motorway, town, night, rain etc. and there is NO test, the instructor just signs something saying that you've done it and you've got pass+, since 6 lessons are about ?105 its worth it, because young drivers are guaranteed to save at least that having pass+.
This is what the website mailed me having put in a request:
Having spent some time looking at the various enquiries on our
Internet
site I came across your enquiry and thought it would be best if I
contacted you personally.
I currently have a couple of 'Young Driver' insurers who are willing
to
offer a special 6 month policy that will allow you a 30% starter
discount (equivalent to a 1 year No Claim Bonus, subject to taking the
'Pass Plus' within 60 days of inception). This would be ideal for you.
The way it works is, you take out the policy for 6 months and
providing
you don't make a claim during this period your insurer will allow you
a
2 year No Claim Discount at renewal.
I can also tell you that payment terms are available on all our
policies.
which sounds pretty good, i think its still going to be about 1500quid for 6months!!! and i won't be able to mod it for ages, but i don't care, i'll havea mk1 golf gti :), and the insurance at the end of it, with 2 yrs ncb, shouldnt be as evil.
Once i've finished advanced driver training(an absolute pain in the arse, just started, but my parents are paying for it because they're scared i'll kill myself in a car that fast when im only 18) it should drop a load more too.
I'd also like to add, that i have worked hard for all of this, none of it is parent financed(except driver training), i paid for all my driving lessons etc. im no rich kid.
And the bit you guys might want:

im an old git (29) !! my mk4 is ?350 fully comp with the mrs on, ive got 9yrs ncd, no points etc, but my mk2 tpf+t is ?309 dont know how they work it out as mk2 only worth about 400quid yet mk4 worth about 7k!!!! , oh yeah im with admiral been with em for years, not too fussy on immobilisers etc and dont mind the odd set of wheels etc!, there online quote facitily is bob on give em a shout may be cheap may not! ;D
-
im 18 also. I know a few driving instructors that can sort a pass+ out for about ?110 without me taking the test so ill look into that for next year. ;D
-
Perhaps i should have made it clear in my post that those figures are tpft, not fully comp, i couldn't even get a quote for fully comp anywhere, let alone be able to afford it.

your not old knightrider
ive got 5 years on you :(
my mk2 costs me ?300 fully comp, ive got about the same ncb as you
been with norwich union direct for a few years now cos its easy just to renew but you should really change every couple of years as the market is so competitive, its just the hassle of searching around for the best quote thats offputting
-
sorry, spelt your name wrong
kniterider ;)
-
cant be doing with renewing, it aint gon eup so ill stick with it!, just abit annoyed how tey charge about the same with cars of different values!! hey name spelling not a prob!!
-
My mk2 16v cost me 600 tpft, 22 only drivin 2 years and 2 years no claims through adrian flux beat most other companies by a good 400
-
Tesco's online do a ten% discount than phoning direct, ive got 6 years no claims an 4 points, my insurance on mk4 20v T 99, was ?4-500 CHEAPER than anywhere else, only bout ?750 years cover! :o
i used to be wiv adrian flux to when i had a old pug205gti but after i had it for a year my insurance actually went up rather than down, so that when tesco popped up!
-
Have you tried www.elephant.co.uk (http://www.elephant.co.uk)
I bet its cheaper? :-\
-
elephant was the cheapest online quote so far but AFAIK they won't let me use the NCD for my daily car to insure my Golf :(
Cheers for all the replies. I'll keep looking.

I had a similar problem when I insured my MI 16. I have 4 years on my mk4 golf but my original insurance company would not accept them for my new car. I have the MI insured with Adrian Flux now as they would let me use this discount but it's not as much as I expected. I pay 250 pounds for my MK1 gti with HIC (great for VW's) My mk4 golf cost's 500 pounds with Norwich union (which are good for the new golf's) and 815 pounds for the MI!!(Think they punished me for owning a Peugeot ;))
Hope that helps.
P.S
I could also do with knowing about the trade insurance as I still need to sort out insurance for my MK3 golf and Renault. It must be cheaper to have them all insured under one policy but I never thought about trade before. Do you need to have your own business?
