hi guys its my 1st post so go easy please????
Ive always had german cars like golf g60's and vr's and my current car e36 325i coupe, but now after so many years of dreaming and building up no claims iv got a decent quote on a nissan skyline r33 gtst. But before this quote the car that i most wanted was a mk4 golf 1.8t, should it come down to it, what would you guys buy if you had the option???ÂÂÂ
Insurance is'nt a problem no more but obviously the golf is cheaper, when i do the comparisons it comes down to:
1.8t and 150bhp or 2.5t and 250bhp but i think that the hicas sytem in the skyline is great, both easy to tune, etc.
thanks.

i would go for the skyline tbh! legend of a car!!!
-
yea i'd be tempted by the skyline myself!
-
i have had both , well an r32 gtr and now have golf gti turbo. you cant really compare them but over all prefer the golf as is much newer, cheaper on fuel (skyline did 15 to the gallon) and the golf is nice and reliable. but then dont get the looks in the golf like used to in the skyline. just make sure if you go for the liner you have deep pockets

Drove a Skyline GTS at an import centre in New Malden as i could just get insurance on it. What a disappointment! It was actually slower than the car i decided to get, a Clio 172, and it didn't handle nearly as well. Wasn't fun at all.
On top of that it may of had the toys but it was really tacky inside. Overall just all show and no go. It has to be GTR or nothing.
Having said that, i wouldn't touch a mk4 golf either.

depends on your situation mate. If your only havin the one car id get the golf for practicality and economy etc. If its a second car deffo get the skyline for the fun factor and the looks recieved.
An alternative tho could be get your skyline and the a mk2/3 maybe 8v as your daily run around. Keep the skyline garaged for lower mileage and sunny days!

get an r32, proper skyline
-
Skyline.
Mk 4's are ugly!
-
the GTS's are very poor. the GTR is the best and the legend. I'd go for the mk4 :D
-
which one is the gts? is it the no-turbo one? there poo!! :undecided:
-
it's the gts-t so a turbo. However, still not a great car, but a different kettle of fish compared to the mk4. All depends what you're after in a car. Practicality? golf... image? skyline... but there are so many better alternatives to that.
-
i knew a guy with a r33 gts and it was feckin quick and easy as hell to drift! i think it was tweaded though...
the way i look at it is you can tune up a 1.8t easily to get more power, the overall finish is better and you can drive it sensibly and still have fun if you want. the skyline is more of a hooligan car!! if i had the choice and money i'd try to get an r34 gtr, but they are in a different league altogether!
-
1.8 turbo or jap?????????? let me think!!!done!!vw all the way dude no questions asked in fact id much rather a very quick mk2 than any of the above!mk4 just dont cut the mustard for me but german engineering is one thing you can't argue over!!

I have had R33 GTS-T, R32 GTR & mk 4 Jabba tuned golf. Mk 4 as standard is pony, chipped is great - I love it. As for the skyline - the GTR is awesome, my 400 bhp gts-t was great fun - and its stupidly over shaddowed by the GTR for no reason - great car - BUT becoming far to chavvy - The golf is a much classyier and better car IMHO - the skylines are hardwork and dear if they go wrong - usually they have been hammered to SH1T by jap owners................see WWW.SKYLINEOWNERS.COM - three different cars.
-
dom mk3 what other car would you buy???, i know every one say's that german engineering is great but alot of people also say jap engineering is great too, the only down side i think to the skyline is 1 cr*p interior and 2 issues regarding to getting parts and repairs.
-
I know where you're coming from mate. I was looking at all sorts of jap stuff before buying my Mk4 GTi a few weeks back.
Previous to this I had an MR2 turbo, which was quick (running 250bhp) but twitchy as hell and gave me some seriously scary mometns. When I wanted a change I looked at the GTS-T as it was in my price range at the time but as everyone else has said the interior put me off. It's just so dated now. If I had gone jap, it would have been a 200sx S14a as they're tunabel and quick as well but look a bit classier than the GTS-t.
In the end though it was the Golf I bought because it is so well put together, no nasty rattles or squeaks, lovely to drive and I think it's the best looking car of the bunch. (actually it was just the blue and red dials!!)
Standard car isn't quick but don't let that put you off, on a back road it's still a hoot to drive and can take whatever you throw at it. Check out Awesome-gti for the video clip of their 300bhp 1.8T.

I'd probably be looking at M3's over the skyline, but that's wholly because I have a soft spot for beemers!. Jap engineering is fine, I had a starlet turbo and that never gave me any issues, even when tuned.
However, rather than buying a fast road car, my plan is for a nice, solid, reliable, ever so slightly tepid normal car (see below!), and a westfield :D

Slyline for the power mate but their is a lot of them about now

yeah very true but when people see a skyline on road everyone turns heads, everyones got a golf (before some one says "that shows you how well there made etc").
what other car would you guys suggest????
-
a saxo
240sx perhaps?
-
i dont think those 2 cars are in the same league really, the skyline is a mental jap built thing, but the golf is more or a relaible but fun car.
a r32 is in more of the same leauge (altho more expensive), or a supercharged vr6 maybe? a few of those about for 4-5k
the problem with jap imports is therey often have no history and have had years of thrashing and when they do go wrong you will struggle finding parts and they wont be cheap!!!!
