Title: Golf Starting Problem
Post by: RobUK on 08 March 2006, 12:12
Hi all,

I've got a problem with my Mk4 2002 Golf GTI (2.0l 8v 115bhp).  Its beggining to be a real pain at starting in the morning, saying that after taking it for a long run, turning the engine off and starting it again 10mins later, its struggles to start.  If i turn it on without tapping the pedal, it either struggles to start or fails completely.  The times it does start with a struggle, the rev counter is low, about 500rpm and is chugging, then after about a second or so the engine jumps into life and rev counter goes straight up to about 1100 rpm and slowly goes back to normal idle rpms as the engine warms.  It has never cut out, missed a beat or anything once started, its just the inital starting.  When i start it and have to put my foot down on the gas it makes the starter motor whine, so i really want to fix this problem before i break the starter motor aswell.  I've been told it could be the HT leads, the air flow meter, etc........ I've already had new platinum spark plugs fitted, which made no difference.  It does however seem less of a problem in the summer time.

Any help in norrowing the problem down would be great.

On a slightly different note, there is also a strange noise coming from the front of the car, i think, not sure as it only happens when driving.  When i change gear and then re-apply the gas with a little more grunt than normal it makes a metalic knocking noise, only one knock tho and it seems to happen on a 50/50 basis.  From 1st to 2nd gear is louder than say 4th to 5th, but while in gear if the car is reved high and then released, still no gear change, then reved again it will make the noise.  Is this just something loose? A baffle in the exhaust maybe????

Any light shed on these would be great, thanks alot ppl, keep up the good work.

Rob

not sure on the 'knocking' problem, that could be 1 of many things....

but on the engine problem, sounds to me like your temperature sender (for the ecu NOT the gauge) is at fault, is playing up.... this tells the ecu to adjust the fueling to suit the engine temperature in conjunction with the maf sensor. the temp sender is only about £20, id try one of these 1st

Is there a way to test the sensor before fitting a new one? Also where abouts in the engine is the sensor located???

Thanx

Just a thought, wouldn't there be any problems while the car was running if the ECU sensor wasn't working correctly? Just got a price for the ECU temp sender from a main dealer, £26.29 plus £1 for a clip.  Should i get one and give it a try?  Need to know where it if first tho, anyone???

Should be on the right hand side of the engine mate, do you know anybody with VAG - COM?  If so connect it up and it will show fault code 17704 I believe :undecided:

No i dont know anyone with that, so i enquired, cheapest i can get it done is £25, so do i get a diagnostic run or just go for the sensor change?

Where abouts on the right side of the engine? By right are you refering to driver side or passenger side?

Thanx guys

pics would be fantastic.  Thought about getting a cable from ebay and VAG COM (the free version) is it worth trying that, whats the difference between the cheap ones on ebay and the VAG COM ones?

thanx gaz
