Hi all
Got my 8v GTI booked in for the cam belt and a new tensioner on Thursday, as it's been about 45-50k since the last belt was done.
Has anyone ever heard of a tensioner making rattly noises, particularly noticable on startup and for the first couple of minutes? I've got a noise, see, and it's worrying a little. I'm hoping it IS the tensioner pulley really....
-
Hydraulic tappets. What mileage is the car?
-
Not the tappets mate. Too rattly for that. I had a mk2 with about 150k on it and they sounded rattly on startup - this is more of a 'random' rattle....
this one's just tipped 110k...
-
Tappets can be very rattly, especially on start up.
-
doubt it's the tensioners making a rattle, they do on a VR, cuss it's got a chain, which clanks against the tensioner, but it's a belt on 8v so can't see it being that, i'd put it down to tappets, they start off with an intermitten rattle that get's worse.....
imo
-
right that's it... you're coming down to check them for me then!
-
where ya gettin it done?
-
Siler Street mate. They quoted me a cheaper price than Carshop (what a bunch of c0cks they've turned out to be!) so I'll see what they say about it....
I've told them to listen for the noise, and if it turns out to be the tensioner, I'll be happy. If not, and it's the followers I'll leave it until it explodes. Then get a vr6.

lol! easy with the dealer bashin there dude!! I was gonna try the guys you suggested, then I thought I might as well just try my normal guy, then I thought nah, wtf, it's not much money anyway. Plus I get a proper guarantee!!
I think it'll be fine, the bloke who took it off me was impressing me with his knowledge of CCs, he said he always looks out for them, and you don't see many about and he likes the blue ones best so I'll be surprised if he bugg3rs it up for me.....
It's there all day mate, I'll be picking it up around 4ish, depending on the weather!!
-
lol.. i got a right to bash ;) ..the service guys there are brilliant.. its the sales people that are arses..
4.. i'll be stuck in me office.. bah... bahhhhhh.. weather is being dead weird!
-
just got the call to say it's done, no probs....
But the noise, which it wasn;t doing this morning when I dropped it off  he reckons was 'most probably the belt being a bit loose, and flapping around against the plastic housing'....
My @rse it was!! If it was that loose, I'd have seen my valves and bits of camshaft following me down the road a long time ago!! BUT, I'll take him on his word and if the noise is there tomorrow on startup, he'll get it back!!
LMAO!!
-
cool :)
am shocked they didnt try to blag on some extra work..
-
well, I'haven't picked it up yet!!
But I think he knew he couldn't blag me cos I knew what I was talking about!
-
well I picked it up at 5 yesterday, no extra work had been done, the only advisory was that I need a new brake fluid reservoir cap...
And the noise is well and truly gone. They said the cam belts stretch a bit on miley AGG engines (maybe ABF too?) and the noise is the belt slapping against the plastic cover...
Anyway, now the car's back and re- timed, it's behaving like it's got a new cylinder!! It wasn't bad before, but it's loads more pokey now!! Well, pokey for a mk3 (measure the speed in knots don't you?)
