Title: add my golf to the list of breakdowns lately!
Post by: Dizzie on 06 March 2006, 15:51
she's just ate the diff

overtook someone in 4th. changed up to 5th and there was a loud munching noise. lost all power delivery. rolled to a stop on the side of the bypass with fluid pouring out the bottom of the block. it was still ticking over, but as soon as I lifted the clutch in gear the engine stopped.

not sure yet. I'm at my mum's house and all my tools are in cardiff. Gonna get the train back so I've got the 8v to drive. Gonna source another 'box.

G60 one on e38 for £150
mk3 16v one on ebay for £190 (that's in bridgend so collection would be easy)

when I was being towed home it was out of gear and the speedo was reading 0mph. suddenly the speedo jumped to 45mph and there was a lot of noise and the car started to pull to the left while I was still attached to the back of mark's 4x4. I held it in a straight line and the noise went. it came back a few times before I got home.

can't see any holes just yet.

I'm not running any boost really at the moment. I guess I got a sh!t gearbox when I had the conversion. likely it had 200k on it ;)

should be getting a G60 one now :)

£150. he says it was rebuilt 5000 miles ago so hopefully it's a good one.

02A from a 16v mk2 Ibiza... seat boys seems  to charge less...

you don't wanna collect, it's in middlesbrough! he quoted me £40 for p&p but unfortunately wasn't available for when I needed it.

I do have a newer engine, but god knows how old the gearbox is that's attached to it. There was a fair bit of play in the selector part so it's likely it had several thousand miles on it...

is this the one with the dodgey selector dom?

Add mine too, Blew the alternator on the way back from southend and ace cafe early sunday morning. Replaced it last night then managed to loose a wheel arch 20mins down the road so its back to the bodyshop  :embarassed:

no mine's the one with the dodgy selector, and it's done 150k miles so maybe that's an indication for your broken one? The 100k I'm replacing it with is absolutely fine (or at last was until I started playing with it but I'm sure the garage will fix it!).

The one from middlesbrough is one I found on the seat forums which I was going to buy, just ran out of time.

apparently it was a mk3 16v 'box before, but I was getting different rpm to mph's than other people also running the same 'box...

could have been an 02J box? they're different ratios I think, from an 8v passat amongst other things...

Post by: Dizzie on 07 March 2006, 18:23
I thought there was more work in putting a 02J into a mk2 than a simple 02A one... I dunno
Title: Re: add my golf to the list of breakdowns lately!
Post by: Dom Mk3 on 07 March 2006, 18:27
not sure, if an 02J box will bolt straight onto mine, then surely the same for yours if yours will now accept an 02A?

What's the diff ratio on the G60 box? apparently 3.94 is the best ratio?
