I went to look at a T reg, 2.0 gti today and everything seemed fine and looked good for the money. Thing is it had very thick creamy orange sludge around the filler cap but the oil itself seemed fine. I would assume this means water is mixing with oil possibly due to a headgasket breakage or could it just be the gap isnt tight on the cap and lets moisture in. What do you think i should i just walk away or haggle the price down?

Plus it had only done 56,000 miles with two owners in almost 7 years

Having just done a search on other posts i've seen it could just be condensation but why does it happen? and why would it appear orangey instead off white? Also has anyone had to change a head gasket on a mk4 and at what sort of cost?
Do you think a compression test would reveal the problem and what sort of cost would it be?
Cheers
Adam

this can be caused by short journeys and sitting around... but tbh if it was that bad i would assume the hg has gone..  i would try to get 500quid off at least that way u can get headgasket + skim and a good service done...

Well the bloke said he does a motorway journey every day but the motorway is right outside his house so must warm it up straight away. He also said that he hasnt noticed loosing much water and the gunk was only round the filler cap by the looks of it not on the dipstick.

If you've got no other symptoms it's probably just condensation.
I've got a 2.0 Mk4, and I get sludge around the filler cap despite the fact that I'm using no water at all, and I do a 40 minute each way commute every day.
Hope that helps.

my 2.0 is the same.. mines been like it for 2years and has never lost any coolent whats so ever, and ive been told not to worry as its just condentation.. must be a 2.0 thing perhaps?

Some cars are bad for this - my current car, a 1.6 8v Astra has a reputation for mayo in the oil cap.

Will do although no one will notice as my mk3 and the m4 to be are both green. My mum thought it was the same car
