Hi, this afternoon I am off to look at purchasing my first golf, its a MkIV 2.0 GTi can anyone give me any advice on what I should be looking for? are there any weak spots that need to be checked out?? also can someone tell me at what mileage the timing belt is due for renewal??
The other option is to look at a 115bhp TDi same age, pro's and cons please would be really handy

the 2.0 dont really suffer from any engines problems as far as i know, just the usual problems that you'll get in any mk4, like MAF sensor, temp sensor, electric windows regs snapping.. :sad:

I've found that the 2.0 GTI tend to use a lot of oil. It's not a problem but even Volkswagen have acknowledged that it's a thirsty engine.
I'd go for the 110tdi but then I just prefer oil burners.... :tongue:

is that just a mk4 problem ? my mk3 hasn't used a drop in 10k. :smug:

As far as I know. Mark threes are too old for us :sad:. I'm fairly sure that people only tend to talk about it when referring to the 4.

personally I'd avoid the 2.0 mk4. it's very underpowered. Spend a little more on the 1.8T which will give you better options if you want to take the power further.

Also, it's nice to have spare key's. Only got one key with my wife's 2.0 GTI, and replacements are around £125.00 :cry:
As said before, they do use a fair bit of oil, and they use more fuel than a 1.8t. but the insurance should be alot cheaper and they are still nice looking, well built cars.

like it has been said before....if you can afford the extra money it would be worth going for the 1.8t - greater possibility of selling it when ure done as well. my mate had a 2.0litre and you can hardly call them 'GTi's' - very underpowered and cost a fortune on petrol. his did use a lot of oil, but probably cos you have the rag the nuts off of it to get anywhere. go for the TDi if thats you only option imo :wink:
