Title: Power steering fluid \ other fluids
Post by: soulman_uk on 03 March 2006, 16:25
car: 1.6s golf 2001 (petrol)

I was checking all my fluid levels last night and my power steering fluid was on the minimum line. What fluid do I need?

also where is the gearbox fluid ? is this a fluid that can be checked by a novice under-the-boneter  or is this in some obscure place.

This is so far what's been done, any advice is welcomed if I've missed something.

brake fluid was easy enough said on the outside use dot 4
oil : 10/40 semi synthetic (using quantum silver)
screen wash (premixed stuff)
power steering -- not done yet, dont know what to use.

know I must be missing something ?

also I read in the haynes manual that the air filter is behind the battery I had a look and can see a pipe looking thing is this a air filter ?

My old car had a square box for an air filter. And how do I get at it to check its happy ?

cheers

Your air filter should be behind your battery in a large plastic case and for power steering then just use auto transmission fluid

Caution !

Only use the 'Green' VW Hydraulic oil to top up your power steering on a MK4. Halfords etc don't sell it, VW only. If you use other stuff your in for problems.
