Not being too overly ofay (sp?) between the two styles (16V and 8V) the main differences I can see is lower torque on the 8V as opposed to more umph on the 16V at higher revs.

Being a commuter to work (50+ miles each way) I decided to go for the 8V as it would give me the fuel consumption as well as giggle factor when needed.

I would love to drive the 16V to see what the difference is in reality but would like to find out what peoples personal preferences are.   I have heard that the fuel consumptions are about the same.. Any comments ?

 Thanks

 Paul :)

16v is better , more torque and BHP.

-
it's down to personal preferance. There are some that will argue 16v all day and there are others there will argue 8v all day. :)

 *cough* 20v Turbo *cough* ;D
-
				fuel consumption: 8v 38mpg, 16v 27mpg

-
16v will also handle better, 10mm lower & stiffer springs

16v gearbox aint good for motorway miles, needs a longer 5th gear
-
				Nice choice of car.

I've got a 1990 gti 8v and also commute 50+ miles each way to work and back. I get around 420miles to a tank (98ron unleaded). I find that the low down torque makes my journey more relaxed when in traffic and on the odd occasion lots of fun when darting down back roads.

However, i would also love to try a 16v. They are undoubtedly a better car compared to the 8v as they are more powerful and have up-rated suspension and brakes. Fuel consumption and insurance are always made an issue of but ultimately these cars are not supposed to be economical a-b cars. And in comparison with other cars of its day with similar performance it had pretty good fuel consumption.

That's my rant over with! Sorry to go on. I would just like to add that i am extremely happy with my GTI and can't think of a better car for the money. ;D

On all older cars you have to get a bit DIY..  I've heard that a 16v needs even more TLC..  True or False?  ???

What the hell is wrong with my car then!!! I only get between 350 and 380 miles outta a full tank!! I got a 1991 8v and commute 40 miles a day and i use Optimax.
Do you reackon its coz i got a piper cross induction kit? My cars on very low miles aswell?

Anyone got any suggestions on why my mpg is low....

 cheers

				I wouldn't worry about it m4nesh.

I travel most of it on the motorway and don't get too many chances to let rip.  :'(

380 sounds pretty good if you are putting your foot down occasionally.

what mpg are you actually getting?  I'm getting about 30mpg or even less on a 90 8v,  25 miles each way, up n down hills, A, B and non-classified back tracks (maybe thats the key to my naff MPG)  . Used to get 35+mpg out of my 480 on the same run, so i'm a bit gutted with the golf :'( ;D

-
				I get 300miles out of ?30  :P

-
i got an 8v and i get about 350 to 380 miles from a tank as well, ive driven a 16v to and they rip from about 3000 rpm upwards, but the 8v feels torqueier?!? from lower down. i got 8v cos of insurance  :(

Well the MFA is showing the average comsumption of 38.ish but I am not too sure of the accuracy of this.  I will be filling up this afternoon on the way home so will have a better idea on accuracy.

Will let you know and thanks for the info on the 2 different versions.  Think I got the better of the two at the moment due to my driving conditions. I too am happy with the car and not found anything close to it for driving fun.

 Paul.

The MFA on my valver shows 32.5 most of the time. If I cane the tits off it it shows 30.3 or something similar. I love it compared to my last 8v though as I just keep the revs up a bit more than I would an 8v and i still have the torque i was use to. I have to admit I like the higher revs.

Okay gassed up this evening and 42 litres to 365 miles..

 42 / 4.54 = 9.25 gallons..

 365miles / 9.25 gallons = 39.46 miles per gallon !!!

Wowza.. If thats correct then I am muchus impressed.. This is from the MFA so I have noted the mileage on the speedo this time and will compare it with the mileage on the MFA next time I fill up.

Sounds cool to me, but 3.5days travelling per fill up is excellent for me.  Last car was an old 1.3 Astra which I bought to ferry the kids around at the weekends as my previous Smart car only had two seats !!..

Okay no laughing, but for fuel economy and playing with the traction control round corners it was fun whilst I had it.  And 87 MPG I couldn't grumble ;)

But I still say since I have got the golf I haven't driven anything that handles like this for a long long while :)

To me GTi's dont seem that bad on mpg. My mate had a rubbish 997cc car and he used to fill up more times in a week than i did in a month. I get 32mpg on average

-
i had a 1.6 driver and i used to get naff all out of a tank but then it was pierburg  ;) 8v is WAY better on petrol!

-
RESULT!!  Just did Hammy's little piece of maths and i'm getting 35.84mpg av.  this is excellent news as i thought i was 30 or less mpg :) :)
