Title: starter motor??
Post by: brother10 on 01 March 2006, 11:52
morning all?!
having a few problems starting my mkI - bless it!
- which isn't helped by the fact it seems to be an intermittent problem?
(i contact the imobiliser, the light stops flashing, turn the key in the ignition, the dash warning lights flash and go out, and then, turning the key to start her, nothing...
any ideas? maybe the starter motor??

and if it is, can anybody let me know where the best place is to get a starter motor for my mkI please??
it's an '83 1.8 GTi campain...

thanks in advance for your help

Maybe a daft question but if it's dead then it's not the battery is it ?  :undecided: Does it try to start ? Does it click or is it completely dead ? Are the lights dim  ?

This guy can get a load of bits for mk1s --> http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/

thank Gibby,
yeah, that was my 2nd thought, but then it starts sometimes and not others??
so it can't be??

it's a weird one - but then it wouldn't be easy huh!?...

i think there's one click? but it's not even turning over??
all the lights seem to be fine...

and thanks for the link

The starter motor may be jamming. If your a mechanical type of guy then take it off and stip it down. But if your not then take it off and take it to your local alernator/starter motor repair shop. Will be allot cheaper and better than buying a new or second hand one.

If it's clicking and jamming try this, stick it in 2nd gear on levelish ground with the handbrake off and rock the car back and forth until it clicks onto the next cog (if you know what I mean) and then try it. If this solves it then it's the brushes on your starter motor and you will probably need to replace it.

I ve known someone ( *whisles) who has just got a hammer when someone is turning the key, and hit it a few times.....it worked for me....cough...cough...my mate

it sounds like it needs a refurb though if it is the starter

There is that as well as I know someone who had to do that ( *whistles) on another car, although I think I, *ahem I mean they,  just hit it and then tried to turn it over and it worked. Another thought, I guess if you are on a hill you could also bump start it too to unstick the starter.

May be the fuel pump relay switch that is faulty. Is there a whirring noise when you turn the key. If there's silence, then it may be that no fuel is being pumped through. Was an intermittent problem for me until it just packed in. Only about £15 from GSF for a new one.
