Ever since i started hanging around the Ford Boys back in the day ive been obsessed with Turbo's! Ive learnt loads of stuff about Fords, and amongst me and my mates we have built some seriously quick cars......
for example,
mates cars include -
Fiesta RS Turbo , 1800cc CVH (194 bhp 245 Ib Torque) before it was run in!
Escort RS Turbo , 1987cc CVH (250 bhp 260 Ib Torque) on 7psi boost (300+ 20psi)
Escort RS Turbo , 1600cc CVH (189 bhp 190 Ib Torque) on 7psi boost (fuel prob)
Fiesta RS Turbo , 2200cc Zetec (360 bhp)
Sierra Sapphire , 2000cc COS (400+ bhp)
Escort Cosworth 2200cc COS (575 bhp)
Then theres me in me Golf! :embarassed:
Ive found Fords are so easy and Cheap to extract BHP and Torque!
What have VAG got to offer to compete with ford? i want Old Skool, nothing new like 20VT cuz simply cant afford to fix it myself....
I was thinking more like Audi Quattro Turbo? or what BHP can Golf G60's goto easily?
-
Actually, to make things clear and so i dont get any abuse from VW blooded boffs, im still keeping my Mk2 Golf, but using it as a daily runner... i start new job Monday with company van so will be able to afford to build myself a fun car. just after some suggestions?
Also was toying with idea of Vauxhall Nova 1.2, i have an Astra GTE race prep engine kicking about and that would go nicely?
What ever i get is gonna be race stripped, road race prepared. so light as possible with only racing in mind!
-
sounds like fun. What about monster sizing the engine? VR6 Turbos are supposed to be able to go to silly bhp's.
-
Id love to do something like that if i had the money!!
But im looking for cheap speed here!
Thats why im keeping my golf as it is, so at least i got a reliable daily runner.
-
Twin turbo - Audi Quattro engine.... mmmmmm power - the trouble is finding the engines... they are rare as these days...
Why not drop a ford engine into VW....
-
Mine could be for sale at the right price!! Old skool with turbo lag, torque steer and a dump valve - just what your after!  Seriously considering selling it and buying a corrado, have wanted one for ages! This one has caught my eye:

How much would you be looking for your Mk2 Turbo Mart?
I wanted to build my own fun car but it will prob be cheaper to buy ready made one!
-

Another ford RS whore
-
vr lumps can be found for as little as 500 quid.
now thats some cheap bhp
-
No point in having all that power if you can't put it down round the corners and in a straight line you only get done for speeding. You want to go light weight striped out racer running balanced engine.
Fords may go quick and have big power but not for very long, unless the engine is made battle proof.
(http://www.maltloaf.co.uk/i/cars/fiesta/hole.jpg) my Fiesta 1800 cvh RST running too much boost, it was fun while it lasted.

Not really sure what its worth?? I think as it sits i would want about £2k (without the momo steering wheel & a couple of minor interior cosmetic bits that were pressies from my missus! stereo negotiable), would put a fresh mot on it for that.
-
^ That sounds like a pretty fair price to me. A lot cheaper than doing it yourself that's for sure.
-
eye, 2k does seem good. if you really wanted to sell it for that im sure youd have no probs!

Yes matt, it was fun! But the reason im posting this is cause Mark has offered me his Escort Turbs really really cheap! :undecided:
Im gonna be earning sh!t loads more money in this new job on Monday so though sod it, i want a Fun car like the Fiesta was... only i aint spending quarter what you spent on that thing! :lipsrsealed:

Cheers guys! was really not sure what to ask cos didnt want to take the p**s with the price, the car probably owes me a lot more but still needs some work to finish. Still undecided whether to sell it or keep it as have owned it two years now and have always fancied a corrado. Maybe watch out the cars for sale section or ebay soon!
Si- I had various fast fords for ages before i saw the light and changed to veedubs! as you said they are great fun, main reason i got fed up with my series one turbo was fighting constant corrosion and it was the most unreliable car ever. It was modded though, heve mates who had stadard cars which were very reliable.
-
martinb, I look around at the corrados too and if you want my advice I think you should go for a G60 or a VR6 as the 16V raddos had a reputation for not being as quick as they looked. That's what I'd go for anyway, although you can pick up some nice 16V quite cheaply these days.
-
i want a turbo too, not seen keen on the lag though
i'll be using a 16v turbo for my fix

Cheers Gibby. My favourite dubs are probably the golf rallye and corrado vr6 unfortunatly both out of budget i think so will probably have to go for a 16v. My car gets used as a daily commute so needs to be fairly reliable and i have heard the g60's can be a bit fragile. Running costs is another major factor too as i have a small baby now (we have a mondeo for carting the kids about ) which is another reason for considering selling the golf as although it has been very reliable it is juicy, so the corrado would just be a cheap daily drive for me and something to play with!

why would you want lag thats what ppl spend lots of money trying not to have ...
also 360 bhp in a fiesta turbo  which ones was it as sunnys is quickest in the country and aint much more than that...

Probably a Max power quote "Owners estimate"

That sunnys was 400 odd.
My mates Fiesta is 2 ltr Zetec bored out to 2.2 with Turbo aswell. And yeah, it has been in Max Power, Redline, Revs, and Fastcar magazine! (power output is proven, not estimate)
Maltloaf... you'v seen the car! Dales (from Nailsea, also has Nova GSI Turbo!)
-
I think I would remember it if I had. Any way joking asside, good luck to anyone who can get big power out of an engine and keep it running with out it blowing up every 1k miles. I recon you should stick with VW get a mk2 turbo

It's good to see they are so many 'ex-Ford' people on here. I grew up on RS Fords and have had 2 Series twos, and a 2wd Saph Cossie. My last series two I had for three years, got to 220bhp with 225lb/ft torque from a low comp 1.6cvh and it never really let me down.... but then I do have a habit of changing things before they have a chance to break! Loved it to bits, was great fun and I know what you mean about the lag. If it's too smooth, it may be quicker, but it doesn't feel right. I'm happier waiting that bit longer then getting that big shove in the back!!
I do love my 1.8T GTi though, it's the complete opposite to the old Fords but I'm hoping to get some decent power from it. Slowly hatching a plan!! :nerd:
-
yup cant beta a big shove of lag..... had sh!te loads of rst's escorts and fiesta's and yeah id sooner hang about and wait for the kick than have it all mr smoothy no rush
gone back to a ford for my work mobile.... not lag though.. well no fookin go at all... lol but it does about 55-60 to the gallon so it will keep me warm and dry till i can use me new bike full time

Everyone says you dont want Lag but thats the best bit i reckon?!
Cant beat the rush of a big turbo car coming on boost and pinning you back into the seats so you cant move or breath! Then a chatter of the waste gate, let the car your racing catch up a bit, then boost again! Grreat fun!!!
