Title: Which exhaust is quietest?

As title really!  Want to change the exhaust system for a less restrictive one and the CAT at the same time.  I've been reading that Miltek are recommended for my 1.8T but I don't want anything too loud.
I like the Golf being quiet during normal driving but a bit of noise when driving harder would be nice!

Also, do you have to change the rear valance and back box or is it possible to get systems that fit as the standard one does?

Miltek do a discrete one that fits behind the valance in the same way as the standard exhaust.  I know Flipmode (a user in this forum) has a 4-motion style Miltek and its not too loud, just a nice gentle rumble at cruising speed but a bit of a rasp when pushing it.

Agreed. My mate had a Milltek cat back with the 4 Motion style on his 1.8T, & it sounded sweet. Was nice & quiet on tickover & cruising on the motorway etc. You can get Milltek's either with an extra silencer in the centre section, or without. & also, as Richy says, you can get the 1.8T OE style back-box.

My Milltek is highly recommended chap. Mine is cat-back system with 4-motion style twin pipes out the back and the 4-motion style valance. The valance only costs about £40 and most places that do the exhaust will sort one out for u if u want some steel poking out the rear. The sound is nice gentle rumble not that loud at all in the car, esp when u lightly using your right foot! But when u sink your foot to the floor it sounds awesome, not a cheap boy-racer style rasp or anything, a nice deep growl, very nice!! Milltek is made from aircraft grade steel and comes with life time warranty so peace of mind assured, happy cruising!

 :grin:  Perfect.  That sounds like just what I'm looking for.

Do they free up much power on these cars?

Flipmode: where'd you get your 4Motion rear valance?  If that's the average price then I'd definately go that way.  Would look nice.

They are really good mate. They free up between 5-15bhp dependant on other mods. The official Milltek website and the place i got mine done are linked below. The rear valance is a readily available part....standard VW kit so easy to locate and should be cheap nationwide. I posted a pic of the back of my car tonight on this forum under the thread called 'Pics of mark 4 rear ends' or something similar...there u can see what it all looks like.
