Title: 1.8T Noisy on initial start up
Post by: rickroe on 28 February 2006, 05:07
Car starts fine but sounds a bit like a diesel for a couple of seconds  on start up.

Not overly concerned as the engine runs sweetly once running, but just wondered if this was normal with this engine?

Be interested to hear any comments

Thanks in advance

Don't want to sound alarmist but , I would be inclined to get the oil pressure checked ( from cold ) ,even if it runs sweet once running , as it maybe the first signs of a potentially expensive :cry:  repair if left ignored/unchecked.  IMO  :nerd:

( Obviously I hope it's nothing to worry about but it's better to be safe than sorry out of pocket !! )

Ive put up a similar post about this one... seems there are a few of us with this problem, roughly 3-10 secs of TRRRRRR noise on start up? depending on how cold?... how does yours sound when the car has warmed up? any ticking noises when idling or anything?

My Mrs' A3 1.8T does this for a couple of seconds from cold too. I put it down to oil starvation of the top end before the oil pressure gets up to working levels.

Had bonnet open with someone else starting her up and the noise sounds only last for a couple of seconds then the engine runs normally, no ticking noises etc. The noise is similar to a tappet rattle, guess TRRRR sound is about right.

Oil pressure comments interesting. MOT due next month so will get it checked at a local VW independant . Also due cambelt change soon as just over 50K mark.

Will let you know if anything is picked up.
Cheers

Nice one. Been on a similar thread to this (last updated today). Would be good to hear what they say. My local VW dealer will only look at mine if I leave it there overnight and even then there's no guarantee it'll happen. Pretty much guaranteed after a cold night though. Mine's only done 20K and just had a service. I've just found out from a mate who owns a Mk5 GTi that it's very common with the 2.0T engines in those models. He says it sounds like a 'bag of spanners' on a cold start!! (55 reg GTi).

So guess we shouldn't worry too much.

Yep mine sounds like that as well.  It's literally just 2 or 3 seconds and then it sounds fine.  Wasn't really worried about it, but if anyone gets any more info I'd be interested to see what it is.

Interestingly I get this noise occasionaly (seems to be more frequently these days) when the engine is warm and only at idle.  When i give it a few revs the noise vanishes but when the revs drop back to idle the noise returns, sometimes sounds like a diesel.  Even more interestingly I can hear the noise much more clearly sitting in the car, even with the bonnet up its not as distinct as it is when sitting inside the car.  Havent heard this noise when the engine is cold.  Suspect its something resonating so not too worried at this stage but a bit alarmed at posts suggesting oil starvation  :undecided:
