Hello I am new to this site. I thinking about getting a VW for the first time. I have owned Vauxhalls all my life and I am wanting to buy my first Golf  . I am looking into getting either a Mk4 Golf 1.8T or maybe a 2.0 model? I am also thinking about the Mk3 Golf VR6. Whats the better one to go for as I don't know anything about them, I want a car with about the same Bhp as my Astra Sri 2.2 (150bhp) or more. I think it's about time I gave the VW a try :) . I want a Golf that will be reliable as I have spent alot of money on my Vauxhall the last few month with Ecu problems and other stuff . Thanks

and a welcome from me
if you're after a Golf I'd recommend the 1.8T. with a remap you'll see close to or even over 200bhp  unless of course you get the Anniversary edition in whic case you'll easily see over 200bhp
Check out the MKIV section for more info

Hello and thanks for the welcome :). I have just been looking at some Golfs in the Autotrader, just the Vr6 ones at the moment. I am not sure they are what I would like. I would prefer the 1.8T Golf  , but I would still need to work on my funds before I get one seeing they cost alot more than the Mk4 Astra  . I am looking forward to getting one and do defo plan to buy one asap . Thanks

Welcome to the site.
Getting a mk4 and which one depends on funds as I think the Anni's are still well over 10k at the mo. If you go for a mk4 try for a 1.8T as the 1.8 20V (non turbo) and the 2.0 are probably not what you are looking for. As for the VR6, you can get a lot for your money with these as they are very cheap compared to the mk4, standard is around 174bhp but find one with nice interior goodies and you're onto a winner. Look around and you'll see what I mean.

welcome to the forum and VW's mate
as gibby said above you cant really go wrong with a nice Mark 3 VR6, the ones with the leather interior etc are the VR6 highlines so keep ur eye out for one of those. Plus they sound awesome with it being a V6
But as you say the 1.8 turbo is always a temptation for the amount of tuneability they have! Tis a tough choice in my eyes! Depends what your budget is and how soon you want to get a golf.
