I know every car is different, and we've all done varing things to them, and driving styles vary, and av trip distance, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc....
But i'm just wondering what u lot are getting for a comparason to my mpg..  I average approx 11.3 on the MFA reading, now according to the manual - you divide this figure by 282.5 - this gives me 25mpg...!?   Sounds a bit rough, think i'm gettin more like 28, maybe 30 at a push.

i drive to plymouth twice a week, 100 mile round trip, usually, sensible driving between 50 and 60 and mfa always reads between 42 and 45mpg. this corresponds well with the amount of fuel i put in it.

general running round/short trips i am getting between 35 and 38mpg, but as you say it all depends on your driving or your mods

k+n 57i is only mod on mine as far as i know

i once went to plymouth in heavy traffic all the way 35 to 40mph top gear and mfa reached 54.1mpg
 dont know what happened there?
-
i regularly get 34+  but on long motorway hauls i have seen 42+. if you dont go above 3k rpm then fuel economy is well good but that is boring  ;)

-
I managed to get high thirties out of vr6, cruising round norfolk at 40mph in 5th gear. Well not bad for a vr6  :D

-
yeah thats good! were you from mr 6 i recognise your plate but dont know why. you bought the car recenlty? im in the bagshot/bracknell area.

-
Yep i'm pretty close to the M3 light water.

-
weird! im in bisley! next time i see you on the road i will flash my lights! black mark 2 8v. 5 door, j reg. small world?

-
Veedubgti8v, thats a well tidy golf you got there, need any service work done?

-
not at the mo. in a few months cambelt but thats it really. only 97k on the clock. i normally use grl motors in woking

-
Where abouts are you? i'm in Bisley. I can do cambelts for under 100 bar  ;)

-
on the estate, yeah i know you i used to have a 3dr driver in capri green. i stopped one day and asked you about some carburettor probs. your name corin?

-
if you reset the thing whils slowing down it goes nuts and gives you 75mpg  :)

-
cool! i wish it was real tho  ;)

on the way back from work last night....

 MFA said:
 time: 10mins

 Oil temp: 92
 Outsde temp: 10

A new land speed record ;D

I don't think I should overtake another arctic on the windy stretch of road again doing 100ish. too many people have been through the fences either side ;D

Lol! its all good tho. you got a heavy right foot?  ;D

U lot  seem to be gettin a decent mpg. See i'm trying to work out if i have a prob or not? Doing that 'divide 282.5' by the MFA reading i'm only gettin 25 - 27mpg, worse sometimes!  I do  drive relatively hard, so i expect to get 30mpg,  but 35+ would be great for the bank ballance!   I've re-read the hand book and still cannot make much sense of this MFA reading. It never goes below 10.0, not even on a mellow drive to the shops.  I live out in the wilderness so i'm never stuck in traffic.  Also on a long motorway run, cruising at 80mph, it gives the harsh reading of 13.0+ !!   Divide 282.5 that by and you get 21.7 MILES PER GALLON !!!!!!!   Any ideas????

-
i dont have to divide anything im not sure what that is all about. mine just says it on the mfa

-
now thats what i need to hear!  my car looks exactly the same as yours, only 3 door.  Mine's a 1990.  Yours?  I just gotta work out how to get the MFA t o give  a MPG reading rather than this 11.3ish figure.  Maybe someone out there knows what the hell i'm on about?!?

-
mines a 92 J reg, i dunno what 11.3 ish is sounds like mpg. i dont divide mine or anything it just says 30.9 or 33.5 or something depends how im drivin etc. maybe your mfa is faulty or something?

-
Not sure it's faulty, cuz it seems to do what the manual sez it should.  Need to find someone with a 1990 model.  You keen on the 5 door ?  I prefer a 3 to be honest, no offence of course.

-
i prefer three door and thats what my 91 was but i was more bothered about drivetrain and bodywork condition than doors. its got 97k on the clock and 14 DEALER! stamps in the book im the third owner, 40ish mature bloke before his wife used it for school run. check out the gallery its 100% fresh and untouched!

Hi I have mk2 8 valver, i usually get readings between 30 and 40mpg on longer runs, and it goes down to around 20mpg if i hammer it. It sounds like your mfa is a bit faulty, i would think you should get a better mpg reading than what you say your getting. the mpg reading on your mfa is taken from a vacuum hose on the inlet manifold that runs through the bulkhead to the back of the instrument panel on the dash, if this hose is split or has a hole in it it can cause inacurate mpg readings on the mfa, can i suggest that you check this for any defects.

-
even if i hammer it the lowest i have seen is 28.2 it returns 32 average consistently tho. cant imagine 10 mpg you would do a tank in 150 milesish!

cheers for the help. looks like i'm going to have bury my head in the Haynes manual again!!
