Hi,

You say the wipers are slow, but is that slow compared to newer cars, or slow compared to another Mk1? If the former, then welcome to the world of the 20 year old Mk1 – be prepared for things like that! If the latter then it may be because of the following:

First of all, are you sure the wiper motor and mechanism are running smoothly and freely?

You may have a sticking wiper mechanism and/or slightly seized blade mountings with a perfectly fine motor or conversely a knackered motor with a perfectly good mechanism. Loosen the wiper arm mountings just below the windscreen and check for rust. Fling a load of WD40 around and see if that makes a difference. Also try a lubricate the wiper arm mechanism in the scuttle area under the bonnet. Lastly, replace the motor. These aren't too expensive from breakers yards and you shouldn;t have any trouble finding one. I think Mk2 Golfs use the same motor but double check that first.

I only say ll this because my wipers were moving with the speed of a glacier and I bought a secondhand motor and arm mechanism only to find out that the original motor was fine, I just needed to lubricate the blade mountings as they had rusted slightly. Once done they run perfectly.

Good luck.

I think this is off a cab, i put one on my last mk1 but it was no faster than the original  :undecided: I heard something about changing the relay as well which is supposed to help but i never found out which one to use - In the end, considering how much mk1's slide around in the wet, i decided i was probably better off slowing down a bit

You can fit a MK2 motor to the MK1 linkage, but you'll need to splice on the MK2 plug to your loom as well.  Not a big deal as I think all the wire colours match up :)

I always thought the mk1's problem was due to a lack of power from the fuse box  :undecided:

If so then swapping the relay may help, its the one with '19' stamped on it.  Replace it with one stamped '99' from a MK3 Golf or Passat to get the nifty variable intermittant wiper function

shouldnt be too much of a problem....(im a sparky...but car electrics are very different :undecided:)......but the wipers move v.v.slowly.
i thought it was just the linkage (ihad a mk2 yrs ago, and the same thing happened) and greased all that but its still soooooooo slow, therefore i thought it was the motor.

good to hear i can put a mk2 one in if i want, but how does a "99" relay give you intermittent wipe if there isnt that option on the stalk????

if its just a lack of power from the fuse box, how have others up'ed it???

phil, the wiper really is that slow!  in fact if it was raining out, then id be in 2 minds wether or not to take the ol'gal out in it  (fair weather car already.. and ive only had it 3 days .. LOL  )

sorry for all the q's but it really is that bad!!

i thought id ask some questions  first b4 i waded into the "brand new" area

Its an ingenious little device, nothing apart from the relay is needed.  All you do, is click the stalk down and up again, then wait for the required delay and click the stalk down again :)

I'd defo go with a newer wiper motor first :)

The rear wiper motor is also the same on a MK2, so if the back one is getting a bit tired you know what to do ;)
Also you can use a MK2/MK3 intermitant relay to give your rear wiprer an intermittant setting, its number '72' but am unsure what number the non-intermittant MK1 relay is.
But it's probably not worth it, my intermittant rear wiper annoys me, I always switch it on then off again!

also a new wiper motor for a mk1 golf is...wait for it...£108+vat...BUT its discontinued haha
probably because of the price hahaha

Go to a scrappy and get a Mk2 front wiper motor with some of the wiring loom that attaches to it. Worked for me a treat and won't cost a lot to do.

What a bunch of muppets.  I've pinched more than my fair share of '19' relays from MK3s
If it has '19' on it then it is NOT the variable relay it MUST have '99' on it :)

The part number is: 3B0 955 531 but its £27!
