I collect my Mk5 GTI DSG in 9 days & have had mixed advise on how I should use the DSG from three different VW salespeople (Male/female) all from the same dealership!
I have never previously owned or driven an automatic, but fell in love with how the DSG operated. I travel approx 20K miles a year on various roads (motorways, towns etc). The thought of the DSG seems the most sensible & provides choices for the driver. However, when I have asked VW on how I should use the DSG, the advise has varied!
Can anyone who owns a DSG confirm when you are temporarily stationary (traffic lights, stop/start conjestion etc) do I leave the car in Drive with the foot of the brake, select Neutral with the foot on the brake or select Park & apply the handbrake? I understand it depends on how long I maybe waiting, but I am not sure if holding the car in Drive with the brake on is good for the car. I do not want to create problems in the future with over using the clutch or brake & they need replacing sooner thank necessary.
In a manual car, more often than not I would leave the car in neutral & apply the brake, thus avoiding clutch control & burning out the clutch.
All three salepeople have given me different views, which is concerning!!
Is there any info in the handbook, which suggests how you should you the DSG?
Your help and advise would be appreciated.
Thanks, EdMass.

I think offiicially with DSG like any auto you should engage neutral and apply the handbrake when stopping at traffis lights etc. I never do. Leaving it in drive and keeping your foot on the brake won't do it any harm. The only down side is if you lose concentration and eas off the brake allowing the car to creep into the back of the car in front. Park shoudl only really be used when parking.

i think the main process of DSG is witchcraft isnt it!
on a serious note, when u are at a stand still when u press the brake doesnt it cut the power so it doesnt try and ease its way forward?

Hmmmm, I think you might be right there, if I remember correctly some of the early threads in this section had people asking something similar as they were cutting out waiting to do right turns. It might be an idea to search in this section, or I could well have just dreamed all that !
-
not so much cutting out, just a lack of responsiveness, more than you would expect from an auto 'box. im not sure if this was resolved with a software update or not.
-
Personally, when I am at the lights or likely to be stationary for a little while, I always put it into neutral. If only for a short while, or in slow moving traffic, leave it in Drive and let it creep forward, controlling with the brake.
-
Many thanks for you comments, I feel much better & trust those your views.
-
I picked my GTI DSG up last Wednesday & wow what a car. Although I cannot comment on the overall power the car is capable of, due to me having to run the car in, you can feel the car wants to pull all the way to the red-line (If desired!). I had the Mk4 4-Motion previously & this car feels quicker than the V6.
I have only driven the car in Drive, but wanted to know if you can select Sport whilst on the move (over taking etc) or do I have to select Sport from a stationary position? I also have the paddles (now standard with the DSG) & wanted to know if you can only operate this when you select the tiptronic setting?
I know I sound paranoid, but I just want to ensure the car is looked after.
-
You can select sport at any speed.
Paddles can be used when in drive, sport or tiptronic. If in D or S and you use the paddles, it will revert to auto if you don't change gear for a while. When in paddleshift, if you hold the right hand paddle, it will revert to auto for you as well.
Enjoy your new car

Thanks VWmaindealer.
Just for your info - The PX i got for the 4-Motion was £10900 (03 plate, £30K miles, met paint, 5dr, one owner). The garage have the vehicle on the forecourt at £13995.
I dread to think how much they have made from the deal, bearing in mind I got no discount for the GTI!

Not as much as you'd think. We make our money in used cars.

VWmaindealer.
I think the dealer has done well - Not only could they make £3K profit from the PX, they could also make more should they offer finance (No doubt they would encourage this!).
Bearing in mind with the options I chose, the GTI cost me £26K & I would expect the dealer has made a few thousand.
Don't get me wrong, I accept a salespearson needs to earn a living & the dealer is in the business to make money. I am a little disappointed the dealer did not perhaps provide a slightly better PX for a loyal customer.
Is it a VW policy that they do not provide flowers to customers when collecting their vehicle or does it depend on the dealer? I have purchased 3 vehicles & never received flowers! Don't get me wrong, personally I couldn't give a damn about the flower, but the wife would have loved them!! It meant I had to folk out another £20 for flowers, having spent thousands on my new car.
-
Flowers? Are they an option for the GTI that I missed while browsing through the brochure or do they come as standard? Also, what colours do they come in? But on a more serious note, my dealer would not be pinned down on a part-ex price for the GTI I have ordered come next year when I told them that I intend to buy the Mk5 Anniversary GTI - I wonder if they intend on skinning me alive?  They're probably already spending the money they intend to make on me in their heads... e.g. holiday in Bahamas, world cruise, kitchen refit etc...
-
Hi illyan.
I had the same problem with my PX - The dealer would not provide a PX figure & I only managed the dealer to guarantee me the price quoted in the Glass's guide for March, when I collected my car.
It wouldn't surprise me if you or any customer experience's the same problem. I guess if the car is in demand & VW have waiting list's, why should they bend over backwards & save anyone money!
Do you know when the Anniversary GTI will be launched?
-
Not sure when the Anniversary is out though I would have thought next year... I have my eyes peeled out for it - I WILL get one  As for the part-ex, I am hoping to lose £2.5k max and I have bought a pretty standard car:
Manual - not impressed with DSG and no clutch
18" Monza Alloys
Smoking Pack - for any future owners and its free
3 door
Front centre armrest
Highline MFA
Pearlescent Black Paint
AutoGlym Lifeshine
Stonechip Protection
The dealer told me it wasn't worth ordering options as I wouldn't get my money back upon part-exing in a years time.
I will get everything including recaro leather if available for the Anniversary
-
Apart from DSG of course
-
Illyun, Sounds like a nice spec. Are you sure about the stonechip protection? Have you seen it?
I've only had one car with the stonechip protection. Essentially it's a self adhesive clear sticky cover that goes over the front end of the car to er, protect from stonechips. Unless you chase gritter lorries for a living, I wouldn't bother. I had it done to one of my demonstrator Touaregs and have to say it looked iffy. I'm still not sure how it will fair long term. I'm concerned it may "yellow" with age. Personally i'd be inclined to not have it and just spend 80-100 quid on a chipsaway bloke when you come to sell it.
Lifeshine is a good product at the right price. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it as it tends to vary from dealer to dealer.
Great colour BTW, Diamiond black is THE colour as far as i'm concerned.

This is same as we do with the A3, it saves you from flapping around and we've had zero bother with brakes or gears in 40K of miles!

Thanks for that VW Main Dealer... I was thinking of getting stonechip protection because I intended to part-ex within a year... from your experience, do any part ex 1 year old cars have any chips and how would it affect the part-ex price? Also, I thought the stonechip covering is easy to remove when you don't want it? At least the 3m product claims to be although I am not sure that this is the same product that dealers offer. I am paying £245 for the Autoglym thing - thats the price on the VW Golf specs and options booklet. I have seen a valeting company offering it for £250. As for the colour, Diamond Black is the best in my opinion and a classic GTI colour. I was also think of Steel Grey and Tornado Red but black one the day by quite a margin.
-
My dealer quoted £199.00 for the Autoglym, but opted against this as you can purchase the product for £40.00 from Halfords or in my case nothing as I subscribed to AutoExpress (Promotion).
I was told that the product would be applied by a valeter & I would need to apply the product to keep the shine.
I am surprised you did not like the DSG option illyum. Although you do not have a clutch, the DSG offers various options & you cannot beat the smoothness.
-
Hmmm... I was told that the Autoglym had a 10 year shine guarantee and that on part-exing the car it would make a difference that I had taken care of it - is this all cock and bull? Also, I was told that 3M scotch guard would be applied on the interior so the cloth was protected against spills etc.. and you get a pack of Auto Glym products and looking at them I estimated their value at between £80-100
-
Just did a bit of research on this Autoglym Lifeshine and it appears that my VW Dealer was right... It is a paintwork sealant guaranteed for 10 years to keep your paintwork in showroom condition and applied by an Autoglym authorised company... Only downturn is that you can't wax it with anything but Autoglym products otherwise you may destroy the sealant - clever of Autoglym :undecided:

Jeez I'm confused!! Anyone got any thoughts on...
1 - Zymol, this would cost about £300 for full treatment..
2 - Supaguard - dealer jobby £250 I think?

confused!!!

Autoglym lifeshine is applied by the valeters at the dealership. Price will vary from 199 to 299+. It is a good product that seals the paintwork protecting it against tree sap, UV etc etc. Inside a product similar to schothcguard is applied to protect the fabrics. You get a large green bag with it full of about a hundred quid (RRP) of products. 10 year guarantee is subject to you polishing with their products but thats no bad thing really!
Supagard is normally about 199 quid. Only a three year guarantee but you don't have to do anything to it. And with the basic pack, you don't get a goodie bag but you do with the more expensive one. Do't pay any more for the leather version of Supagard. It retails for 50 pounds more but coststhe dealer teh same and there is actually less work involved.
Both products are good but don't expect bullet-proof laquer. They don't protect against stonechips, scratching or bird sh!t. Bird droppings must still be cleande off straight away. These products remove the need to polish the car when you wash it but have the car look like it has been polished. To give you an idea, currently about 50% of our new cars go out with paint protection.
Both these products are hagglable and you can pay around 150 for either as the salesman is on a seperate commission for selling it and would rather discount it than lose it.

Yet again, excellent advice and some gems there that would have saved me money on my Autoglym order if I had known... But there again, I would feel bad in taking away £50 from a dealer's commission when I was prepared to fork out £21500... am I too good or too stupid? Or too rich?
-
Put the car in neutral at the lights, it does my head in having someone's brakes lights in my eyes for 30 seconds, especially at night!
-
Brake lights on when at a junction or traffic lights annoy me no end
I find it really rude and inconsiderate
