It's always possible that it has had a transplant, but then didn't the 8v mk1s and 2s share the same engine anyhow? Which could explain why someone has told you that.
Do you know the engine code of it?
-

does it have k-jet? the mk1 engine code is dx (well me tin top's is anyway) i think the mk2 8v is pb? also they run digi injection.

The Mk1 started with a 1.6 8v engine, then it got the 1.8 8v.
It's obvious from looking in the engine bay whether it's a Mk1 or Mk2 engine.
The Mk1 has the air-box across on the passenger side of the engine bay, the Mk2 engine has the airbox on the drivers side of the engine bay.

My cabs a k-jet DX engine too.
-
dont forget the early mark2's had k-jet also up until around about 85/86 i think.

Regarding mk2 engine airbox on the drivers side only - early 8v and 16v also had airbox on the passenger side...
The best way of finding out is to find the engine code...

I stand corrected, but I've never seen that in a Mk2.

Always the best option.
In fact if you call a VW parts place, and give them your reg number or chassis code, they'll be able to look up what engine was meant to be in the car when it was made. (This certainly works for newer cars, not sure about older Mk1s though).
