Title: Hazard lighs not working
Post by: GemGTI on 19 February 2006, 18:32
I was told it was the switch that was faulty so I bought a new one off ebay and this doesn't work either. Does anyone know why this could be? The indicators are working fine but nothing happens when I turn the hazards on except a green light comes on on the dash. And I've done something really stupid... whilst trying to sort the hazard switch out I tried to put a dash blank in below where the hazard light goes and accidentaly dropped it and it fell through the hole and had gone behind the dash! Typical me! What a numpty! Anyone have any ideas how to get it back out as otherwise that will be another rattle that drives me crazy!

Regarding the Hazards lights - check the fuse/reply is not the issue - full details of fuse/rely setup on mk1's are shown on this website

http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~kaw5/electrical.htm

Regarding the  blank cover - take the stereo out and you should be able to get your hand behind the dash to get the item out...

Hope this helps.

:nerd: Sounds like its probably the relay, if the green light comes on & the indicators work then the circuit should be ok - if you know someone else with a mk1 you could try their relay before buying a new one.

Its unlikely that blanking plate will stay behind the dash for very long, theres nothing behind there to hold it - i wouldn't recommend sticking your hand behind there as you could end pulling wires off plugs etc...  you'll find it on your carpet one day when cleaning and wonder what it is and where it came from

You dont seem to be having much luck at the moment  how did you get on with the rust problem

Your cicuit is fine. I think your hazard relay is "sticking". Relays can often stick. Give the fuse box/relays a tap and it might start working.

With the balnking plate - remove the stereo, this will give you more access to see where its gone.

What rust problem? Do you mean my knackered chassis? I've had the welding done and the nearside sill is now solid. I'm gonna get the offside done too though just so its solid on both sides. No I really am not having much luck at the moment! I keep annoying certain people (car mechanics and auto electricians) because I dont know how to sort anything out for myself! :embarassed: And then when I do try ie- the hazard light switch it all goes wrong and I drop stuff behind the f**king dash!!! Oh well at least I'm never bored!

Have a word with Tucker, he had exactly the same issue with his hazard lights, turned out to be a mixture of blown fuses and dodgy connections :)

what was the fix for this problem? i have the exact same issue, i just bought a new hazard switch off the bay - but now im starting to think that wont help...is it the relay that is just goosed?

the green light comes on steady, but nothing happens.

that is usally caused by a fault with the hazard switch :)
